Mercer County dog licenses on sale

Staff report

MERCER, PA.

Mercer County residents can now purchase dog licenses at the county treasurer’s office or from one of more than a dozen area dog agents.

State law requires all dogs 3 months and older to be licensed by Jan. 1 of each year. Owners who fail to license their dogs could face a fine of up to $300 for each unlicensed dog.

All license fees have increased for 2015. An annual license is $8.50, and a lifetime license is $51.50. If the animal is spayed or neutered, the annual fee is $6.50 and lifetime license is $ 31.50. Discounts are available to senior citizens and people with disabilities.

The dog licenses can be purchased several different ways: by visiting www.mcc.co.mercer.pa.us and clicking on “Buy License OnLine,” through the mail, in person at the county treasurer’s office in the Mercer County Courthouse, or at local Pennsylvania dog agents.

Licensing fees support the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Dog Law Enforcement Office, which is responsible for ensuring the welfare of dogs, regulating dangerous dogs and overseeing annual licensing and rabies vaccinations.
