Ex-Ursuline coach applies at Massillon

Former Ursuline football coach Dan Reardon has applied to be the head coach at Massillon High.

Reardon, a Canfield High graduate, went 72-29 in eight seasons with the Irish, advancing to the Division V title game from 2007-10 with wins in the final three. He spent the past three years coaching in Colorado.

“We said we would never rule anything out when we moved,” Reardon said. “It would have to be a great situation though because we do love Colorado.”

Three Valley natives earn All-GLIAC honors

Walsh senior offensive lineman Zach Conlan (Ursuline), Lake Erie senior WR Tommy Jackson (Hubbard) and Malone senior WR Josh McLaughlin (United) all earned honorable mention All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors.

Conlan started 10 games this season at center for the Cavaliers (4-7). Jackson caught 36 passes for 621 yards for the Storm (4-7) and finished his career with 2,281 receiving yards and 13 TDs. McLaughlin caught a team-best 25 passes for 345 yards and three TDs for the Pioneers (1-10).

Oregon QB Mariota wins Maxwell Award

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota has won the Maxwell Award, given to the nation’s outstanding player.

Mariota was presented with the prize Thursday night during the 24th College Football Awards Show at Disney. It was his third major award of the night. Earlier in the evening he received the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. He was also selected as the Walter Camp player of the year in a separate announcement.

Other award winners Thursday were: Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright (Bednarik Award for defensive player of the year), Maryland’s Brad Craddock (Lou Groza Award for nation’s outstanding kicker), Utah’s Tom Hackett (Ray Guy Award for punter of the year), Iowa offensive tackle Brandon Scherff (Outland Trophy for outstanding interior lineman), and Louisville’s Gerod Holliman (Jim Thorpe Award for nation’s best defensive back).

Plenty of moving at MLB winter meetings

Baseball’s winter meetings ended with an old-style spurt of swaps, with All-Stars switching teams at a rapid pace and executives scrambling to fill roster voids.

Alfredo Simon, Dee Gordon, Yoenis Cespedes, Miguel Montero, Jeff Samardzija, Brandon Moss, Dan Haren and Howie Kendrick were among the All-Stars dealt by the time teams headed home Thursday, and Matt Kemp and Jimmy Rollins were on the verge of switching clubs.

The Los Angeles and Chicago teams were the epicenter of change, along with the Miami Marlins. Twelve trades involving 44 players were made over the four days, according to Major League Baseball.

Phantoms prepare for Stanley Cup visit

Youngstown Phantoms co-owners Troy and Aafke Loney will join Vindicator sports writers Kevin Connelly and Tom Williams on Vindy Talk Radio this afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

The Phantoms are hosting Pittsburgh Penguins night on Friday, December 19, with special appearances from Penguins alumni and the Stanley Cup.

Curbstone coaches to honor state champs

The Curbstone coaches regular luncheon will honor the area’s fall state champions on Monday at Lucianno’s Banquet Center in Austintown.

Haylee Harford of Labrae High School, Ryan Fowler of Warren JFK, the McDonald girls cross country team and the Maplewood boys cross country team — including individual state champion Tristan Dahmen. The event will start at noon and the public is invited to attend.
