Camera set to capture birth of penguins in Pa.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A high-resolution, infrared camera is set up, ready to capture the pending births of two penguins at a Pittsburgh zoo.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported today that the eggs laid about a month ago are expected to hatch sometime next week at the National Aviary.

The parents, Sidney and Bette, had two other sets of chicks at the zoo in 2012 and last year.

The aviary’s managing director calls the webcast a way to raise awareness about the plight of penguins as well as what the facility does to care for them.

The Penguin Point exhibit encompasses 17 African penguins. There are fewer than 20,000 of them currently living in the wild.

The new chicks will live with Sidney and Bette for a month or so.
