2 officers shot near Atlanta expected to survive

DECATUR, Ga. (AP) — Two police officers were shot in a gun battle this morning near the eastern edge of Atlanta, leaving one suspect hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

A second suspect was captured late this morning after an hours-long search involving dozens of officers, police dogs and helicopters.

Both officers were taken to hospitals with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries, DeKalb County police Capt. Stephen Fore said at a mid-morning news conference. One officer was shot in the thigh and the other in the calf, he said.

The gunfire and manhunt began around 6:45 a.m., when police responded to a report of a home invasion in an apartment complex, Fore said.

"They were immediately fired upon," Fore said.

At least one and possibly two of the officers shot back, and a suspect was wounded, Fore said. That suspect was in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Fore said.
