Cheerleader who collapsed listed in stable condition

The Ursuline High School varsity cheerleader who collapsed earlier this week at a school basketball game was in stable condition Wednesday at Akron Children’s Hospital, a school spokeswoman said.

Lauren Petro, 16, an Ursuline junior who lives on Youngstown’s North Side, was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital on Tuesday night after collapsing at a home game. She was stabilized at the hospital and then transferred to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron.

The teen collapsed as the team’s starting line-up was being announced. She lost consciousness and heart function briefly, witnesses told The Vindicator on Tuesday night.

Mail carrier sues over dog attack

A mail carrier has sued a Compton Lane couple and their landlord, saying they negligently failed to restrain a pit-bull terrier that attacked and injured her as she delivered mail to the couple’s home.

Christy Ferry of Kinsman, a U.S. Postal Service employee, sued Scott and Kathy Mackenzie and their landlord, Stonecrest Income Fund LLC, of San Jose, Calif., on Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

Ferry is seeking more than $125,000 in damages for the injuries she said she suffered Dec. 14, 2012, and is demanding a jury trial.

Neither the Mackenzies nor Stonecrest executives could be reached to comment.

Man shot in torso

YOUNGSTOWN

Police say a man was shot in the 1900 block of Summer Street on the South Side about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A police spokeswoman said the man suffered a gunshot wound to the torso. She said the injuries were not life-threatening. The man’s name was not immediately available.

So far, there are no suspects, the spokeswoman said. The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Public park session

The Mill Creek MetroParks board of park commissioners will host a public session for the purpose of gathering information regarding running a levy campaign at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave., Boardman.

Additionally, park commissioners will have a special board meeting, with an executive session only, to consider the employment of a public employee at 9 a.m. Saturday in the conference room at the administrative offices, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, Canfield.

The board’s regular meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave.

Smartphone stolen

AUSTINTOWN

An Austintown Fitch High School teacher’s iPhone was stolen Tuesday morning at school.

According to a police report, the teacher left her smartphone on the desk of her classroom and closed the door, but did not lock it, and went and taught in another classroom for first period. That was from 7:40 to 8:40 a.m. Tuesday.

She came back to find the phone missing and alerted authorities.
