As of Wednesday, investigators from the Ohio State Highway Patrol had not filed charges against inmates at the Ohio State Penitentiary who stabbed two corrections officers inside the facility Tuesday.

Authorities said the inmates who plotted the attack used a shank to stab the two corrections officers, and that another officer was punched during the incident which occurred at 10 a.m. while the officers were transporting the two prisoners from one location to another within the facility, according to 21-WFMJ TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

The two officers were taken off prison grounds to receive medical treatment, after which they were released. The names of the inmates were not released.

Fire damages house

HUBBARD

A fire at a house in the city did approximately $85,000 in damage to the structure, said Eagle Joint Fire District Chief Ron Stanish.

The fire department got the call at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at 383 Westview Ave. Liberty Township Fire Department assisted.

Stanish said no one was home at the time. The fire started in the basement in the laundry area. The cause is still undetermined.

Sentenced to 6 years

WARREN

Colin Foster, 32, of Comstock Avenue Northwest and Clermont Street Northeast was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to manufacturing, trafficking and possessing heroin.

Police confiscated drugs worth more than $20,000 from the Comstock address when they conducted a raid there in June following a two-month investigation. Police recovered about 100 grams of heroin and various items used to manufacture heroin.

Ex-cop pleads guilty

WARREN

Richard G. Ross, 73, of Girard, a retired former captain on the Girard Police Department, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted aggravated drug trafficking Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. He will be sentenced later.

The U.S. marshals Violent Fugitives Task Force arrested Ross in May after he was secretly indicted on two counts of aggravated drug trafficking.

Police said he sold prescription drugs in December 2013 to an undercover investigator with the Trumbull Ashtabula Group Law Enforcement Task Force.

Ross has been retired since at least 2001. He was a retired Girard police captain in 2001 when he served as a member of the Girard Civil Service Commission, according to Vindicator files.

Computer giveaway

YOUNGSTOWN

The Computer Shoppe and Green Youngstown are teaming up for their fourth year to give away a free computer to each of 10 local families this Christmas.

From now until Dec. 22, any Mahoning County K-12 student can go to the Computer Shoppe, 2620 Mahoning Ave., and enter the drawing for one of five free desktops or five free laptops.

The Computer Shoppe refurbished the machines donated for recycling and will give them away to students in need.

No purchase is necessary to enter, but students must be present to enter the contest. The drawing will take place at 11 a.m. Dec. 22. Winners do not have to be present at the drawing and will be contacted for pickup in time for Christmas.

Robbery reported

WARREN

Two males robbed a man and woman at gunpoint in their house on Beechcrest Street Northwest at noon Tuesday.

The couple had just come home from the bank and accidentally left the door unlocked. They heard the door open and then saw the two men, one of whom had a gun.

The husband told the men to get out, but one of the suspects took the woman’s purse. The husband then grabbed the purse, and the robber put the gun to the husband’s chest.

One of the men pushed the woman to the floor, knocking over a plant.

Science program set

Shop with a Cop

BAZETTA

The Bazetta Township police and fire departments will conduct their Shop with a Cop and Fireman event at Walmart, 2016 Millennium Blvd., at 10 a.m. Saturday.

This is in conjunction with Walmart, Great Clips and the McDonald’s restaurant on Millennium Boulevard. Among the people who will be helped this year are the members of the Arcuri family who recently lost their home and its contents to a fire on McCleary Jacoby Road.

The event also will provide gifts to five children from Lakeview Elementary School.

Drives in Struthers

STRUTHERS

Students at Struthers High School are hosting two drives this week. The student council is collecting nonperishable and household items. The items collected will be donated to Faith Fellowship Church, 238 Elm St. Additionally, the school’s cheerleaders are collecting new, unwrapped toys for Toys For Tots. Donations can be made at the high school, 111 Euclid Ave.

The YWCA of Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave., is offering an information session on the Health Insurance Marketplace from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and assistance with enrollment from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Health care navigators will be available to help participants wishing to enroll in a health care plan. Individuals wishing to enroll in a plan must bring proof of income and identification.
