AUSTINTOWN

Austintown schools have officially fired Robert Greier, a HOPE Academy tutor, for “inappropriate conduct with regard to help provided to a student.”

HOPE, an acronym for Helping Others Pursue Excellence, is an online extension of Austintown schools that allows students to retake classes that they have failed.

The incident that led to Greier’s firing was that he recommended that a 16-year old student write about five ways to kill a teacher. Superintendent Vincent Colaluca said last week that “it was an irrational decision on guidance on how to guide a student to help him with his work.”

The board approved Greier as a HOPE tutor at its Sept. 16 meeting. Several tutors for Falcon Pride Online and HOPE, both online extensions of Fitch High School, were approved at that session.

The board took its action against Greier at a special meeting over the weekend.

Bethany Carlson gave the board a report on food protocol within the schools, specifically as it relates to food allergies.

“We are looking at instituting some board policy changes with food in classrooms and food in the schools,” Colaluca said. “We have to make sure the kids are safe.”

A vote on changes to policy will take place in a few months once the board works on the wording and what to specifically change.
