School bus battery thefts leave students stranded
STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga.
Thieves have given students in metro Atlanta a new excuse for missing class: The battery was stolen from my school bus.
Dekalb County Schools police say a total of 90 batteries have been stolen from the school buses since October.
WSB-TV reports that some students at Stone Mountain Middle School were late or didn’t make it to school at all after the latest theft was discovered.
Authorities say the motive for the thefts is a mystery, though batteries can be resold on the black market.
DeKalb County Schools public-safety director Don Smith says a suspect vehicle was caught on surveillance video: an older-model, black Ford Expedition. Police haven’t identified the driver.
Smith says a task force has been created to investigate.
US: Postal worker says she stole out of boredom
TAYLOR, Mich.
Federal authorities say a Detroit-area postal employee accused of stealing as many as 2,000 pieces of mail said she did so out of boredom.
Sharon Berrien is accused of pocketing any cash from the mail and dumping the leftovers along Interstate 94. Most of the items were greeting cards. Berrien was charged Monday with stealing mail while working at a Detroit mail-processing center.
Investigators say she told them the thefts began last spring.
The probe started in October when mail was found along Pelham Road and Interstate 94 and given to the Taylor postmaster.
On Nov. 21, 800 pieces were found in Berrien’s trash. Three bags were inside in a closet.
Berrien says she kept $1,000 to $1,500.
Investigators said that when they asked her why she did it, she told them, “I was bored.” She said she didn’t have any financial problems.
Student charged after teacher eats pot brownie
ANNAPOLIS, Md.
Police say a Maryland teenager eating a pot brownie in class panicked when his teacher asked him for a piece of the treat, and that he is now charged for obliging.
Anne Arundel County police said Tuesday that the 17-year-old didn’t tell the teacher that the brownie contained marijuana. She began feeling ill and acting disoriented and was brought to the nurse’s office at Broadneck High School in Annapolis on Monday.
The teacher told police that the student had given her the brownie during third period and that she suspected it contained marijuana.
The student, from nearby Arnold, was charged with juvenile counts of administering a dangerous substance, assault and reckless endangerment. Police did not release his name, and they say he was released to a guardian.
