The Tigers went 3-27 in Culp’s three seasons at the helm.
YSU trio earns Horizon League honors

Nina Grambling has been named Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Runner of the Week while sophomore Arnaldo Morales (Struthers) and fellow sophomore Jaynee Corbett have been named Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Field Athletes of the Week for the period of Dec. 2-8. Grambling registered three first-place finishes. At the YSU Icebreaker, Grambling was the only runner to win two events. Her time of 7.58 seconds in the 60-meter dash toppled a field of 32 competitors. In the 200-meter dash, the junior’s time of 24.65 seconds took first by .66 seconds.
Morales and Corbett took a tie for first and two fifth-place finishes. Starting in the high jump, Morales registered a mark of 2.03 meters, good for a tie for first-place. In the long jump and triple jump the sophomore registered marks of 6.48 meters and 13.65 meters, respectively. Corbett had first-place marks in both the weight throw (16.12 meters) and shot put (14.06 meters).
YSU reveal Hladiuk and Kessler award

The Youngstown State University department of intercollegiate athletics announces the creation of the Guenther A. Hladiuk & Mary Ann Kessler Scholarship to enhance the YSU athletics scholarship endowment fund. Hladiuk and Kessler have established a scholarship for a deserving YSU student-athlete enrolled in the College of Creative Arts and Communications.
From 2011 through 2013, Hladiuk proudly served as President of the Penguin Club Board of Trustees. Both Kessler and Hladiuk have been long-time contributors and fans of all YSU athletic teams.
Zillo is recipient of Robert O. Fishel award
Jason Zillo a native of Youngstown, Ursuline grad and Executive Director of Communications & Media Relations for the New York Yankees, has been named the recipient of the 2014 Robert O. Fishel Award for Public Relations Excellence, presented during the baseball winter meetings.
The Robert O. Fishel Award, named after the longtime baseball executive, goes to the “active, non-uniformed representative of Major League Baseball whose ethics, character, dedication, service, professionalism and humanitarianism best represent the standards propounded by Robert O. Fishel.”
Zillo is concluding his 19th season with the Yankees, including his eighth as the head of the franchise’s media relations.
During his time with the club, Zillo has worked seven World Series and 16 Postseasons, and he oversaw the Yankees’ communications efforts for the 2008 All-Star Game.
Ohio State’s Herman wins Broyles Award
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.
Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman is the winner of the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in college football.
The Buckeyes went 12-1 this season and lost two starting quarterbacks to injuries. Yet, Ohio State beat Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten championship game and made the four-team College Football Playoff.
The Broyles Award is named after former Arkansas athletic director and football coach Frank Broyles, who had a number of assistants go on to successful college and professional careers.
The award was presented Tuesday by the Rotary Club of Little Rock and Delta Dental.
Other finalists were Oregon’s Scott Frost, Lane Kiffin of Alabama, TCU’s Doug Meacham and Missouri’s Dave Steckel.
