YSU baseball team has OSU on schedule

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State baseball team will host Ohio State as part of a 23-game home schedule in 2015, Penguins head coach Steve Gillispie announced on Monday.

The Penguins will host the Buckeyes for the first time in program history on May 12 at Eastwood Field. YSU will also host non-conference games against Pittsburgh, Canisius, Ohio, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron.

Youngstown State will begin the season by playing its first 14 games on the road, starting with a three-game series at Jacksonville State on Feb. 13. That series will be a homecoming for Gillispie, who spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach with the Gamecocks before becoming YSU’s head coach prior to the 2013 season.

YSU’s Hain named HL player of the week

INDIANAPOLIS

Youngstown State junior center Bobby Hain has been named the Horizon League men’s basketball player of the week, the league announced Monday.

Hain had two double-doubles last week in the Penguins’ three games. He started the week with a career-high 24 points and a league-high 14 rebounds in YSU’s 89-81 win at Robert Morris.

Hain averaged 18.3 points and 10.3 rebounds for the week. Oakland freshman guard Nick Danielswas been named freshman of the week.

Holiday Basketball Classic set for Saturday

POLAND

The Mahoning Valley hosts its 3rd Annual Holiday Basketball Classic at Poland High School this Saturday. The four-game tournament features eight team — Poland (girls), Hubbard (girls), Girard, Austintown Fitch, Canfield, West Middlesex, Poland and Ferrell — and all proceeds raised benefit the United Way of Youngstown.

Pirates get P Lindblom off waivers from A’s

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed pitcher Josh Lindblom off waivers from Oakland and added former major league manager Grady Little and former infielder Kevin Young to the front office.

Lindblom, 27, is 5-8 with a 3.82 ERA in 110 career games with four teams. He made one appearance for Oakland in 2014, spending most of the season at Triple-A Sacramento.

Little, who managed the Boston Red Sox from 2002-03 and the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2006-07, will serve as a senior adviser to general manager Neal Huntington. He most recently served as coach at Hickory Grove Christian prep school in North Carolina.

Young will serve as a special assistant with the Pirates. He played 11 of his 12 big league seasons in Pittsburgh and was a career .258 hitter. The Pirates announced the moves Monday.

All 10 baseball Hall candidates fall short

SAN DIEGO

The baseball Hall of Fame’s Golden Era committee has failed to elect any of the 10 candidates from a group whose primary contributions were from 1947-72.

The Hall announced the results Monday as the annual winter meetings began.

Dick Allen and Tony Oliva each received 11 of 16 votes, one shy of the 75 percent needed for election. Jim Kaat appeared on 10 ballots, Maury Wills nine and Minnie Minoso eight.
