Youngstown man charged with assaulting Boardman cop

BOARDMAN — Township police used a stun gun during an arrest where the suspect struck an officer.

James Cutshall, 52, of Youngstown appeared in Mahoning County Area Court here on Tuesday for arraignment on misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and operating a motor vehicle impaired, and a felony charge of assault on a police officer.

Cutshall was arrested Sunday night after police said he called 911 while driving drunk. Police found him pulled over on the side of the road near the 5300 block of South Avenue.

Cutshall became uncooperative during a set of field-sobriety tests, police said. After he was placed under arrest for OVI, Cutshall attempted to break free from officers and struck an officer with his shoulder, according to a police report.

The officer then used his stun gun to strike Cutshall in the chest.

After subduing Cutshall, police said he continued to threaten officers during the booking process. He was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Police found beer and an empty liquor bottle in his car. Cutshall is free on bond, pending another court appearance Jan. 20.
