South Range High School senior Sarah Baker used her senior project to help others while raising environmental awareness.

Those efforts resulted in a grant for her school.

Baker decided to raise awareness about the importance of recycling by holding an aluminum-can drive. She collected more than 5,000 aluminum cans and took them to the recycling center. She donated all of the money she collected to the Someplace Safe charity to help victims of domestic violence. Baker also collected 15,000 pop-can tabs during a three-week period and donated them to Akron Children’s Hospital to help raise money for children in need.

To spread her word and charity even further, Baker entered her project into the Novelis Corp. School Competition. Novelis is an aluminum fabricating company in Warren. Five local schools participated in the competition, but South Range was the only high school. Baker took third place in the competition based on the amount of aluminum she collected in her can drive. Her efforts won a $1,000 technology grant for her school.

“This is amazing,” Principal Steve Rohan said about the grant. “We will be using the grant to purchase scientific calculators for our students to use on the state tests. This way our students won’t have to purchase them on their own. They are very expensive devices.”
