In an effort to raise money for its PTO, Union Elementary School hosted a pancake breakfast on Oct. 25.

Union Principal Michael Masucci said the event was a big success.

“Our pancake breakfast went exceptionally well,” he said. “In all, we served close to 400 guests. It really was a great day.”

Masucci said the breakfast was a chance to try a different kind of fundraiser.

“This was our first year having one,” he said. “It was just time to do something new. In the past, our PTO hosted very nice tailgate parties out at the high school. I just wanted to try something a bit different.”

Masucci said the breakfast brought in nearly $1,000 that will be used for special programs and events that the school’s students will benefit from.

Masucci said the pancake breakfast’s success will lead to similar events in the future.

“Our PTO decided not to hold a typical fundraiser this year,” he said. “Families were not asked to buy cookie dough or wrapping paper. The response has been positive and I think led to such a wonderfully attended breakfast. Once again, it was time to do something different. There are other events like Saturday’s planned for the rest of the year.”

Masucci said the event would have never been the success it was without the help of many people.

“We couldn’t have pulled this event off without the support and generosity of Bob Evans,” he said. “The Boardman store donated all of the pancake batter and maple syrup for our event. In addition, Poland Board of Education member Mr. Beau Weaver, was kind enough to have Hormel donate all of the sausage links and patties. Representatives from the PVFD (Poland Village Fire Department) were also on-hand during the event and set up a display outside the building where informational packets and fire prevention tips were provided to students and their families. It looks like we will definitely do it again.”
