SENIOR SALUTE — BAND EDITION
ANGELISA MELNEK (left) and PAIGE SLAVIC.
Name: Paige Slavic; Angelisa Melnek
Instrument: Flute and Piccolo; Flute and Piccolo
Q. When did you start playing your instrument?
A. Slavic: I started playing the flute in the fifth grade. I wanted to play a woodwind instrument and when I tried the flute I knew it was what I wanted to play.
Melnek: I started playing the flute in the fifth grade, and the piccolo in the ninth grade. I picked the flute because I loved the way it sounded. I wanted to play the piccolo for marching band because it was small and easy to carry, and I also wanted to be heard.
Q. Best memory of being in band/marching band?
A. Slavic: Definitely Disney to play in the Main Street Parade on New Year’s Eve 2013. It was one of the best times ever. Also every year when we go to Massillon Band Night is always fun. I would also have to say band camp too, because you can hang out with all of your friends.
Melnek: My best memory would be going to Massillon Band Night in my freshman year. It was so overwhelming seeing so many people watch us perform, but when it was over I couldn’t help but smile as the crowd stood and cheered us on.
Q. Why is music important to you?
A. Slavic: It is something that everyone understands; it’s like a universal language. Even if you don’t have an ear for music, you can always tell what’s good and bad. My favorite musical numbers were “Party Rock Anthem,” the “Pop Medley” and “Thanks for the Memories.”
Melnek: Music is important because it speaks what can’t be expressed. It’s the universal language that everyone understands. Some of my favorite numbers were “Party Rock Anthem” and “All the Lights.” It was so much fun dancing with the whole band.
Q. If you were speaking to a group of students about joining the band, what would be your number 1 reason for joining the band?
A. Slavic: Band is life! It’s so much fun and that sounds clich , but it is true. The band lifestyle is something you have to accept, but once you do, you have more fun than any other group or team in the school. It’s so worth it. Just try it for one year, if anything, you won’t regret it.
Melnek: Being in band makes you feel a part of something. You meet your best friends in band. It is more than just a bunch of people playing instruments, we are a family when we succeed or fail. We do it together and when we do succeed it is the greatest feeling ever to know that all your hard work paid off.
Q. What college do you hope to attend/intended major?
A. Slavic: I am considering either Kent State University or Youngstown State University, which a major in either English or Broadcasting and Journalism.
Melnek: I plan to attend the University of Pittsburgh and major in Environmental Science or Legal Studies.
