With Halloween approaching, the Poland library hosted a Halloween Howls event on Oct. 28 during which children gathered for various Halloween-themed events and were encouraged to dress in costume for the 30-minute program.

“We’ve had Halloween school-age programs pretty regularly every year,” Poland library assistant supervisor Amanda Kollar said. “We’re going to do Halloween songs, games, stories, a craft. They’re going to make a ghost craft and all kinds of Halloween fun.”

The books Kollar read were “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything,” “What’s in the Witch’s Kitchen?,” “Room on the Broom” and “Snappy Sounds.” Among the songs were “If You’re a Monster and You Know It” and “Little Ghost.”

The program attracted 14 adults and 24 children, some of whom dressed in costume. Among the costumes were The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Snow White, a fireman and Little Red Riding Hood.

Kollar also played a memory game with the children, She put pictures of several Halloween items on a board, including a witch’s hat, a ghost and a haunted house. She had the children cover their eyes, during which she removed one of the items. She then asked them to guess which item she had removed.

Kollar said games and activities such as that are a good way to help the children prepare for school.

“We’re going to have Halloween stories, so it’ll hopefully get them interested in some books and get them to check out some library materials and have fun reading,” she said. “Get to know other kids, socialize. The craft they’re going to be making, they’re going to be cutting, so they’ll be working their fine-motor skills. We’ll be doing various games, so they’ll be using their imagination.”
