Koins for Kids drive in Canfield
Elementary students in Canfield are hoping to win a Handel’s Ice Cream Party for a second or third time. The students are participating in the Handle’s Koins for Kids Campaign to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The schools will be accepting donations through Dec. 12. The schools will be competing against other Mahoning County schools to try to raise the most money per student. The winning school receives and ice cream party. C.H. Campbell has won the event two of the last three years and Hilltop won the event once.
Wine taste fundraiser to be Feb. 6
The ninth annual St. Michael Parish Wine Taste will take place on Feb. 6 inside the church Family Life Center. Proceeds from the event benefit the Center. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 330-533-6839.
First Night Youngstown is seeking event staff
First Night Youngstown, a family-friendly, alcohol-free, celebration of the arts, is looking for event staff to assist in its downtown New Year’s Eve event on Dec. 31. Event Staff must be at least 16-years of age (with parental approval) or older. Staff is needed to sell admission buttons at each of the indoor First Night Youngstown venues. Event staff will work in pairs and each staff member will be awarded a $25 stipend at the end of the evening. The 4-hour shifts will vary depending on the venue. Event Staff will not be scheduled after 10 p.m. An event staff training session is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of the Ohio One Building. The Ohio One Building is located in downtown Youngstown at the intersection of E. Boardman and Champion Streets. Student art on display
The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its annual Student Art Show from Dec. 1-21 at the McClurg Road facility. Students who learned or honed their skills at the Y during 2014 were invited to participate. More than 30 students will show 60 pieces of art. While many are beginners, others have become so accomplished that they’ve been accepted into some of the most prestigious art shows in the area, often winning awards and selling their work. Breakfast with Santa
The second annual Breakfast with Santa to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will take place on Dec. 6 from 9-11 a.m. at Antone’s Banquet Centre, located at 8578 Market St. in Boardman. Breakfast with Santa will feature a breakfast buffet, visits with Santa, a mascot parade, craft and activity stations, decorate a doughnut, face painting, singing and dancing and a chance auction. All children will receive a special gift and a free photo with Santa. Guests may bring their camera for additional pictures with the mascots and other entertainers which include Scrappy from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Sparky from the Youngstown Phantoms, the Chick Fil A Cow, Disney princesses, Sir CC from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chuck E. Cheese, YSU’s Pete and Penny Penguin, Pete Za Hut, Sprinkles and Cuppie from Dunkin Donuts, and Webster from the Akron Rubber Ducks. Holiday closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24; Christmas Day, Dec. 25; New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31; and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
Friends of PLYMC’s Canfield Committee sets fundraiser
Support the new Canfield Library by purchasing Stone Fruit Coffee special blend for the holidays. The cost is $15 per bag. Coffee can be purchased from one of the Friends of the Library or at Stone Fruit Coffee in Canfield. Proceeds benefit the Canfield Library Capital Campaign.

Pick up a flyer at the library and bring it to the Canfield Ruby Tuesday fundraiser on Dec. 30, all day, and 20 percent of the net sales will return to support the Canfield Library Capital Campaign. Flyers will be available in PLYMC libraries.

Free blood pressure check
There will be a free blood pressure check by the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association for adults on Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm library.

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the MetroParks Farm library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning on Dec. 9 and 23 at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The MetroParks Farm library will host twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. on Dec. 15. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Charity raffle prize to be popular doll
Canfield Operation Blessing is selling raffle tickets for an Innerstar My American Girl Doll in the original box. Go to innerstar.com to see the details of the doll. Tickets, which cost $1 each or six for $5, will be sold through Dec. 9. Purchase locations are Canfield Presbyterian Church office from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. through Dec. 9; at the church’s west side door from 5-7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 8 and 9; and at the office at Austintown Rulli Bros. from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. through Dec. 9. The drawing will be Dec. 11. The winner need not be present. Contestants must be 18 or older, have proper I.D. and take the winning ticket to pick up the prize at the church. Proceeds will purchase food for the church pantry.
Canfield Rotary Lighting of the Green
On Dec. 6 beginning at 5 p.m., Canfield Rotary will be continuing its tradition of community service by sponsoring the Canfield Rotary Lighting of the Green. Join the rotary in kicking off the holiday season with carolling, seeing a live nativity, visiting Santa, carriage rides and more. The event will take place at the center of Canfield, the Canfield Green.
Holiday movie screening
A free screening of the movie, “Mary of Nazareth,” will take place on Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Family Life Center at St. Michael Parish, located at 330 N. Broad St. in Canfield. This full length feature film, produced by Ignatius Press, is a new motion picture of the life of Mary, mother of Jesus Christ, from her childhood to the Resurrection of Jesus. The diocese of Youngstown Offices of Evangelization, Pro-Life, Marriage and Family and the pro- group, Men and Women United for Life, are co-sponsoring this event. It’s free and open to the public. Canfield High School to host 26th Annual Craft Show
Seniors at Canfield High School are sponsoring the 26th Annual Craft Show at the school on Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The money earned at this event enables the students to sponsor two dances, graduation and even contribute to local charities. There are more than 240 vendor spaces available and more than 3000 shoppers are expected to be in attendance. Santa will be at the show from 2-4 p.m. entertaining the children. The cost of admission and parking is free, as well as a shuttle service from area parking lots.

The Ursuline Center offers mini retreats
Looking for a way to renew your spirit and keep your perspective amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? The Ursuline Center is offering four mini retreats for Advent and Christmas by scripture scholar Sister Lisa Marie Belz. Belz, an Ursuline Sister of Cleveland, will present “What’s The Good News? Gospels of Advent & Christmas,” on Nov. 22 from 1-4 p.m. at the Motherhouse. Attendees are encouraged to bring their Bibles, questions and desire for spiritual time away. The cost is a donation of $15. Sister Lisa Marie is also offering a series of Advent mini-retreats at The Ursuline Center in December. The public is invited to one or all sessions, with donations for each just $15. All aboard the Polar Express
Join Canfield Presbyterian Church as they journey to Bethlehem to see the Savior Jesus and to the North Pole for reindeer games and the candy shop to make homemade candy canes on Dec. 10 from 5:30-7:15 p.m. at Canfield Presbyterian Church, located at 140 West Main St. in Canfield. Wear your favorite jammies and the Polar Express train and attendants will serve pizza and hot chocolate. There will be a movie showing of “The Polar Express” from 7:15-9 p.m. Every one is welcome and asked to bring a donation of a child’s Christmas toy for the Operation Blessing toy-giveaway program. MCCTC’s Horticulture Club poinsettia fundraiser
The Horticulture FFA Club at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is taking orders for red poinsettias for the upcoming holiday season. The plants are single, pinched (multiple bloom) in a 6.5 inch pot. You have your choice of green, red or gold foil for around the pot and you can also add a white, green or a red satin bow. The poinsettias will be ready for pick-up starting Nov. 20 and the sale will go until Dec. 17. The cost of the plants is $8.50.
