Student art on display
The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its annual Student Art Show from Dec. 1-21 at the McClurg Road facility. Students who learned or honed their skills at the Y during 2014 were invited to participate. More than 30 students will show 60 pieces of art. While many are beginners, others have become so accomplished that they’ve been accepted into some of the most prestigious art shows in the area, often winning awards and selling their work. Breakfast with Santa
The second annual Breakfast with Santa to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will take place on Dec. 6 from 9-11 a.m. at Antone’s Banquet Centre, located at 8578 Market St. in Boardman. Breakfast with Santa will feature a breakfast buffet, visits with Santa, a mascot parade, craft and activity stations, decorate a doughnut, face painting, singing and dancing and a chance auction. All children will receive a special gift and a free photo with Santa.
Guests may bring their camera for additional pictures with the mascots and other entertainers which include Scrappy from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Sparky from the Youngstown Phantoms, the Chick Fil A Cow, Disney princesses, Sir CC from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chuck E. Cheese, YSU’s Pete and Penny Penguin, Pete Za Hut, Sprinkles and Cuppie from Dunkin Donuts, and Webster from the Akron Rubber Ducks. Celebrate the season and create memories that will last a lifetime at this family event. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Holiday closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24; Christmas Day, Dec. 25; New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31; and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.
Friends of PLYMC sets fundraiser
Support the new Canfield Library by purchasing Stone Fruit Coffee special blend for the holidays. The cost is $15 per bag. Coffee can be purchased from one of the Friends of the Library or at Stone Fruit Coffee in Canfield. Proceeds benefit the Canfield Library Capital Campaign.
Cheers to the new Canfield library
Pick up a flyer at the library and bring it to the Canfield Ruby Tuesday fundraiser on Dec. 30, all day, and 20 percent of the net sales will return to support the Canfield Library Capital Campaign. Flyers will be available in PLYMC libraries.
First Night Youngstown is seeking event staff
First Night Youngstown, a family-friendly, alcohol-free, celebration of the arts, is looking for event staff to assist in its downtown New Year’s Eve event on Dec. 31. Event Staff must be at least 16-years of age (with parental approval) or older. Staff is needed to sell admission buttons at each of the indoor First Night Youngstown venues. Event staff will work in pairs and each staff member will be awarded a $25 stipend at the end of the evening. The 4-hour shifts will vary depending on the venue. Event Staff will not be scheduled after 10 p.m.
An event staff training session is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of the Ohio One Building. The Ohio One Building is located in downtown Youngstown at the intersection of E. Boardman and Champion Streets. Friends of PLYMC - Canfield Committee
The Canfield Committee will meet at the Boardman library in the Children’s Activity Room while the new Canfield Library is under construction. The next meeting will be Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m.
Puzzle swap
The Boardman library will host a Friends of PLYMC Puzzle Swap on Dec. 10 at 5 p.m. Bring your once created puzzle, limit six per person to swap. Sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC.
Wine taste fundraiser to be Feb. 6
The ninth annual St. Michael Parish Wine Taste will take place on Feb. 6 inside the church Family Life Center. Proceeds from the event benefit the Center. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 330-533-6839.
Blood drive
The Boardman library will host a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross on Dec. 29 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. The drive is proudly serving the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital by taking blood donations to help our community. This event is for adults.

Need help downloading books to your eReader, want help with your tablet or laptop, or can’t wait to download magazines and movies to your device(s)? Come to the Boardman library during regular hours throughout December for a free one-on-one individual session with a librarian. Check into chess
Join the Boardman library as they play chess on Dec. 14 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. If you would like to learn to play, they will be happy to teach you. This event is for all ages.
The weather outside is...
Frightful or not that bad? You pick. Predict the amount of snowfall Youngstown will get for the month of December during regular hours at the Boardman library and win its best stay in and read prize: a library mug, some hot chocolate and a Barnes and Noble gift card. In the event of a tie, a winner will be selected at random. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
An hour of code
The Hour of Code‚Ñ¢ is an opportunity for every student to try computer science for one hour. Spend an hour learning how to write code and earn a certificate of completion at the Boardman library on Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. This event is for tweens and teens in grades 4-12.
Handmade gifts that don’t look handmade
The Boardman library will host a craft program for tweens and teens who have made one too many handprint wreaths on Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Get some fresh ideas and create gifts you’ll be even more proud to give away. This event is for children in grades 4-12 only.
It’s all about yarn
Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas, or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another to the Boardman library on Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. Share your holiday gifts created in yarn. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for teens and adults.
Trim a tree for December
Decorate an ornament for the Boardman library’s all-season tree during regular library hours in the month of December. This event is for children of all ages.
Sensory Story Time
Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals. Children must attend with an adult. Registration is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library. This event is for preschool and school-age children.
Life-size Candy Land game
A life-size Candy Land game for children of all ages will be available at the Boardman library on Dec. 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. Follow the Candy Land trail to win a sweet treat at the end. This is a family program and preschoolers must attend with an adult.
Holiday puppet show
The Boardman library will host a holiday puppet show featuring the “12 Days of Christmas” and other skits at 7 p.m. on Dec. 9 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 10. The one-hour family program for children of all ages will close with a freeze pop treat.
Animal heroes
Of course your pet is your best friend, but is he your hero too? Come to the Boardman library on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. to hear about animals (including dogs, cats, dolphins and gorillas) who have gone above and beyond to help, protect and save people. Meet a real live hero when a K9s for Compassion therapy dog stops in to visit. This event is for animal lovers of all ages.
All you can read buffet
Join the Boardman library on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. for this read-a-thon and choose from a menu of adventure, mystery, fantasy and/or science fiction. We’ll provide pizza, drinks and junk food to enjoy while you read. Bring your bean bag chair, your favorite pillow, sleeping bag and don’t forget a blanket. See if you have what it takes to read for four straight hours. Sign up now to reserve your spot. You can join in any time during the event. Join the Boardman library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader on Dec. 16 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a holiday program.

Join the Boardman library for developmentally appropriate book, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a holiday program.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The Boardman library will host twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at 10 a.m. on Dec. 5, 13 and 19. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Natural chemical imbalance relief seminar
Dr. Ted Suzelis, N.D. will be presenting a free seminar titled, “Feeling Anxious, Depressed or Stressed? Natural Chemical Imbalance Relief” on Dec. 11 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman (SouthBridge West Complex at 755 Boardman-Canfield Road, Suite D-3). Learn about a new testing procedure that can measure neurotransmitter levels to accurately assess chemical imbalances in the brain. This seminar will also discuss natural therapies that specifically target these chemical imbalances to relieve anxiousness, depressed mood, sleep disturbances and other related health issues. Miss Universe recipient to judge competition
Karen Miller of Boardman has been selected to be on the judges panel in November at this years WNBF Worlds Cup competition in Boston Mass. Karen, a two time winner of the WNBF Worlds Cup, has dedicated her life to health and fitness. Miller is a member of the local entrepreneurial community as a private fitness instructor and the new owner of Custom Awards and Gifts on Market Street in Boardman.
YWCA offers free preschool
The YWCA of Youngstown has received a grant from the Ohio Department of Education to provide free preschool to eligible families. Families below 100 percent of the federal poverty line will qualify for free preschool. Families between 100 percent and 200 percent of the FPL will qualify on a sliding scale fee basis. The child must not have ever received any local, state or federal childcare funding and must be age 3 or 4 or not yet age eligible for Kindergarten. The ODE preschool hours at the YWCA are 9-11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Breakfast and lunch are not included. The YWCA is also now enrolling for CDI Headstart. CDI Headstart hours are 8:30 a.m. until noon, Monday through Thursday. CDI Headstart provides free preschool for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds who are income eligible.
