On Nov. 3, the Austintown library hosted its second Facebook for Seniors class to help area residents learn how to use Facebook.
“A lot of people come in and ask us about Facebook and wanting to learn how to do it,” said adult services librarian Lindsay Platt, who taught the class. “You don’t always have time to do it one on one.”
Platt said the class was also put on in October, but she said she wasn’t sure about the frequency going forward.
“I’m not sure if we’re going to do it every month,” she said. “I guess we’re going to see how many show up. If we only have a couple at a time, we might do it bi-monthly.”
Three people signed up for the Nov. 3, although only two attended.
Platt spoke on the different aspects of Facebook that the attendees would learn.
“How to make an account,” she said. “We have a little Powerpoint presentation. Just the basics, nothing real detailed. How to find friends, send requests, how to make status updates, things like that.”
One of the attendees was Pat Pochiro of Youngstown.
“Seniors have to learn how to get into this stuff,” he said. “I’m familiar with it, so I thought maybe I’d catch up on something, how to operate it.”
Platt said learning how to use Facebook can help people stay connected with friends and relatives who don’t live close by.
“It helps them to connect with their other family members, especially people who live far away,” she said.
Pochiro said he was going to use Facebook to do just that.
“My daughter-in-law puts a lot of her things with the grandchildren on her page, pictures and things like what they’re doing,” he said. “I’d like to keep up with that.”
