Wine taste fundraiser to be Feb. 6

The ninth annual St. Michael Parish Wine Taste will take place on Feb. 6 inside the church Family Life Center. Proceeds from the event benefit the Center. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 330-533-6839.

First Night Youngstown is seeking event staff

First Night Youngstown, a family-friendly, alcohol-free, celebration of the arts, is looking for event staff to assist in its downtown New Year’s Eve event on Dec. 31. Event Staff must be at least 16-years of age (with parental approval) or older. Staff is needed to sell admission buttons at each of the indoor First Night Youngstown venues. Event staff will work in pairs and each staff member will be awarded a $25 stipend at the end of the evening. The 4-hour shifts will vary depending on the venue. Event Staff will not be scheduled after 10 p.m. An event staff training session is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. in the second floor auditorium of the Ohio One Building. The Ohio One Building is located in downtown Youngstown at the intersection of E. Boardman and Champion Streets. Breakfast with Santa

The second annual Breakfast with Santa to benefit Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley will take place on Dec. 6 from 9-11 a.m. at Antone’s Banquet Centre, located at 8578 Market St. in Boardman. Breakfast with Santa will feature a breakfast buffet, visits with Santa, a mascot parade, craft and activity stations, decorate a doughnut, face painting, singing and dancing and a chance auction. All children will receive a special gift and a free photo with Santa. Guests may bring their camera for additional pictures with the mascots and other entertainers which include Scrappy from the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Sparky from the Youngstown Phantoms, the Chick Fil A Cow, Disney princesses, Sir CC from the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chuck E. Cheese, YSU’s Pete and Penny Penguin, Pete Za Hut, Sprinkles and Cuppie from Dunkin Donuts, and Webster from the Akron Rubber Ducks. Lions of Zone 4 host meeting

Forty-eight Lions attended a Zone 4 meeting at The MVR Club in Youngstown on Nov. 13. Everyone had a meal and spent some time with each other. Lions Clubs from Hubbard, Girard, Youngstown, McDonald and Austintown reported on activities and services done in their respective communities since they last met in August. They also reported on upcoming events. Lions Past District Governor, Tom Zickefoose presented the Austintown Club with a first place patch for their banner for winning his PR Contest in a club with less than 31 members. Zone 4 is made up of 144 Lions in the five clubs, with more waiting to be inducted. Lions have served their communities all around the world since 1917. New Lions are always welcome. Student art on display at YMCA

The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its annual Student Art Show from Dec. 1-21 at the McClurg Road facility. Students who learned or honed their skills at the Y during 2014 were invited to participate. More than 30 students will show 60 pieces of art. While many are beginners, others have become so accomplished that they’ve been accepted into some of the most prestigious art shows in the area, often winning awards and selling their work. Holiday closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Christmas Eve, Dec. 24; Christmas Day, Dec. 25; New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31; and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.

Friends of PLYMC’s Canfield Committee sets fundraiser

Support the new Canfield Library by purchasing Stone Fruit Coffee special blend for the holidays. The cost is $15 per bag. Coffee can be purchased from one of the Friends of the Library or at Stone Fruit Coffee in Canfield. Proceeds benefit the Canfield Library Capital Campaign.

Cheers to the new Canfield library

Pick up a flyer at the library and bring it to the Canfield Ruby Tuesday fundraiser on Dec. 30, all day, and 20 percent of the net sales will return to support the Canfield Library Capital Campaign. Flyers will be available in PLYMC libraries.

Page Turners book club

Love books? Looking for a good read? Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come in and join the fun on Dec. 17 from 6-7 p.m. This event is for adults.

Cookbook club

Celebrate the holidays by sharing your favorite dessert recipes and joining the Austintown library in a cookie swap on Dec. 18 at 6 p.m. (Note: waiver must be signed.) This event is for adults.

Teen Advisory Board

Become a member of the Austintown library’s Teen Advisory Board on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. Your opinion counts. Let the library know what you would like in your library. You can help out with library programs, help decide what books to buy, discuss what you are currently reading, meet new people and have a snack. They will be meeting the first Saturday of each month at 3 p.m. Teens in grades 7-12 are eligible.

Holiday movie matinee

No school? Nothing to do? Come to the Austintown library to watch a holiday movie on Dec. 20 at 2:30 p.m. The library will supply the movie and a treat. You can bring a pillow and blanket if you like. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The holiday movie will be rated G or PG. This event is for children of all ages.

Teen: ornaments

Make some Christmas ornaments to take home at the Austintown library on Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 and is a holiday program.

Make your own cards

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at 10 a.m. on Dec. 15 and 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 22 at the Austintown library. Each participant will create a greeting card with a matching envelope. Class size is limited, registration required. This event is for adults.

Make a wreath with Bea

Make a festive burlap wreath with Bea Richardson on Dec. 16 at 11 a.m. All supplies will be provided. Reservations are needed; walk-ins will not be accepted. Decorate an ornament for the Austintown library’s all-season tree during regular library hours in the month of December. This event is for children of all ages.

Guess ‘n’ go

Guess how many candies are in the jar throughout regular hours in the month of December at the Austintown library. The closest guess wins the candy. This event is for children of all ages.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning on Dec. 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library for developmentally appropriate book, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This is a holiday program.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The Austintown library will host twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in December. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Pre-kindergarten story time

The Austintown library will host a program for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills on Dec. 17 at 11:30 a.m. They will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten. This program will have a holiday theme.

Children’s theater presents “Sleeping Beauty”

Talking frogs, feisty princesses, silly wise women and more will be part of thishilarious retelling of a timeless classic for the entire family on Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. at the Austintown library. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. This event is for all ages. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided at the performance.

Columbus Children’s Theater presents “Scrooge”

The Austintown library will host “Scrooge,” based on the classic, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. This event is for the entire family. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult. American Sign Language interpretation will be provided.

Lunch with Santa to be Dec. 7

Austintown Bounce, located at 4317 Kirk Road in Austintown, will host a Lunch with Santa event on Dec. 7 from 1-3 p.m. Admission of $7, which includes popcorn, a small drink, a snow globe, unlimited play on the inflatables, games, prizes and more. Fitch High School to host choir concert on Pearl Harbor anniversary

The Austintown Fitch High School concert choir will be hosting their annual winter concert on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. The concert choir will open the show with a medley from the hit animated movie, “Frozen.” In remembrance of Pearl Harbor, the choir will sing “Land of the Free,” a patriotic song by Michael and Angela Souders. The concert will also feature the men’s chorus and women’s chorus I and II. The Fitch vocal department is more than 150 voices strong. The event is open to the public and tickets can be purchased at the door. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens.

DQ locations to have Christmas events

The Austintown and Cornersburg locations of Dairy Queen will be hosting special Christmas events for the community. The events will take place on Dec. 5 at the Cornersburg Dairy Gueen, located at 3555 S. Meridian Road, and on Dec. 6 at the Austintown Dairy Queen, located at 146 N. Canfield Niles Road, from 5-8 p.m. The events will feature music, a photo with Santa, “live” reindeer, roasting chestnuts on an open fire, hot dogs, marshmellows, hot chocolate, Christmas carols and more.

Toys for Tots at Austintown Elementary School

Austintown Elementary School and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve are working together to help children in the Austintown community have a Merry Christmas. AES is a collection location for the Toys for Tots program, which collects new, unwrapped toys from now until Dec. 19. The collection box is located at the main entrance of AES. The toys are distributed as Christmas gifts to children in need during the holidays.

MCCTC’s Horticulture Club poinsettia fundraiser

The Horticulture FFA Club at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is taking orders for red poinsettias for the upcoming holiday season. The plants are single, pinched (multiple bloom) in a 6.5 inch pot. You have your choice of green, red or gold foil for around the pot and you can also add a white, green or a red satin bow. The poinsettias will be ready for pick-up starting Nov. 20 and the sale will go until Dec. 17. The cost of the plants is $8.50.
