Trumbull County OKs use of brine on roads

WARREN

The Trumbull County commissioners today gave the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office approval to use brine from vertical gas and oil wells on county roads for ice and snow control. The byproducts of hydraulic fracturing will not be used, county officials said.

Use of brine will start right away.

Brine will be used to pretreat roads as an way to use less rock salt because the cost of rock salt has risen so much this year, county Engineer Randy Smith said.

Jack Simon, who works for Smith, said research has indicated that brine causes less corrosion of motor vehicles than rock salt.
