The Gotham Independent Film Awards were Monday in New York, the first glitzy gathering in Hollywood’s three-month-long awards season. The Gothams honor independent film with awards picked by panels of critics and film writers. Top winners were:

v Best Film: “Birdman (Or the Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance),” directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.

v Best Actor: Michael Keaton for “Birdman.”

v Best Actress: Julianne Moore for “Still Alice.”

v Best Ensemble Cast: “Foxcatcher”

v Audience Award: “Boyhood,” directed by Richard Linklater.

“Christmas in Rockefeller Center” (8 p.m., NBC): “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” whisks viewers to the annual glitzy gala, where Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Cyndi Lauper, LeAnn Rimes and others help to light up the big tree in the Big Apple.

“Saturday Night Live Christmas” (9 p.m., NBC): Merry Christmas from Tarzan, Tonto, Frankenstein and other characters.

“NOVA” (9 p.m., PBS): Astronaut Neil Armstrong’s family and friends share insights about the first man to walk on the moon.

First Night seeks staff for venues

YOUNGSTOWN

First Night Youngstown, the family-friendly, alcohol-free celebration of the arts on New Year’s Eve, is looking for staff to sell admission buttons at each of the indoor venues in the downtown area. Staff members must be at least 16 years old (with parental approval) and will work in pairs. Each staff member will be awarded a $25 stipend at the end of the evening. The four-hour shifts will vary depending on the venue. Staff will not be scheduled after 10 p.m.

A training session is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. in the second-floor auditorium of the Ohio One Building, at East Boardman and Champion streets.

Paula Poundstone coming to theater

Comedian Paula Poundstone, a regular panelist on NPR’s weekly humorous quiz show “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me,” will come to the Ford Family Recital Hall, 260 W. Community band at St. Patrick’s

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Area Community Concert Band will give a one-hour concert at St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oakhill Ave., at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, as part of the church’s Sauce and Songs program.

A free-will offering will be accepted. The band has more than 60 members, ranging from high schoolers to senior citizens. A spaghetti dinner will take place in the social hall from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. For information, call 330-743-1109.
