School-bus crash kills 2 kids, 1 adult

KNOXVILLE, TENN.

Two buses bringing children home from school collided on a Tennessee highway Tuesday afternoon, killing two students and an adult and injuring another 27 people.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated one bus made a sharp left turn, crossed over a concrete median and hit the second bus, which was traveling in the opposite direction. The second bus flipped onto its side and slid.

The children killed were in third grade or below, said Knoxville Police Chief David Rausch. The adult who died was an aide.

Three seriously injured people were taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center and were in stable condition, Rausch said.

Portman, Paul make 2016 announcements

CINCINNATI

Two prominent Senate Republicans announced Tuesday they would seek a second term in the U.S. Senate, although their announcements had dramatically different implications on the 2016 presidential contest.

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman declared he would not seek the presidency, choosing instead to focus on his Senate re-election.

At the same time, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul announced he would also seek a second term in the Senate, although his team says he could still run for president despite a state law that prohibits running for both offices at the same time.

In Kenya, militants kill 36 non-Muslims

NAIROBI, Kenya

The heavily armed men roused the sleeping quarry workers in the dead of night.

As in previous such attacks, the gunmen singled out the non-Muslims by asking them to recite the Islamic creed. Then they killed 36 of them — most with a gunshot to the back of the head, according to a survivor who hid nearby during the slaughter.

The Islamic militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the methodical massacre in northern Kenya early Tuesday — 10 days after a similar attack on a bus that killed 28 — and it prompted President Uhuru Kenyatta to shake up his national security team amid public outrage over the violence.

Al-Shabab has been fighting for years to establish hard-line Islamic rule in neighboring Somalia. The al-Qaida-linked group has vowed to strike against Kenya for sending its troops into Somalia, and it has claimed it was behind the bus attack and the siege at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi last year that left 67 dead.
