Another falls victim to IRS scam call
BOARDMAN
A 46-year old township resident lost thousands to an IRS scam.
The man received a call on his home voice mail from a woman claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service on Nov. 26. He called back and talked to an unknown male, a police report said. That man said he owed $7,657 to the IRS from an audit performed from 2007 to 2012. The township resident is self-employed.
The resident was then transferred to a man who claimed to be with the IRS and requested the money in the form of Green Dot loadable credit cards from Rite Aid. He purchased the cards and gave the serial numbers off of the cards over the phone. He was then told that the case had already been sent to a court and the initial amount would not be refunded unless he sent an additional $6,000.
The resident then received calls from a phone, identified in the police report as a Mahoning County jail phone number, wanting to know if he was home so he could be arrested.
