In girls basketball, Melinda Trimmer scored 18 points and had 8 rebounds to lead the Warriors (1-0) at Malone University on Saturday. Kaylee Manning and Pavin Heath each added nine points for the Warriors. Carly Santoro had 23 points for Bellevue (1-1).

New Philadelphia beats Canfield 50-37

Rachel Tinkey had 10 points, Erin Risner had nine and Savannah Barko had seven points for the Canfield Cardinals (0-1) on Saturday night in girls basketball action. Tori Moreland led New Philadelphia (1-0) with 17 points.

Datsyuk has two goals, leads Red Wings to win

DETROIT

Pavel Datsyuk scored twice and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-3 for their fourth straight victory.

About a third of the arena, including the Vancouver zone, went dark 29 seconds into the game after a minor power failure. The game was delayed 33 minutes.

Niklas Kronwall, Danny DeKeyser and Gustav Nyquist also scored, Henrik Zetterberg had two assists and Jimmy Howard made 30 saves for Detroit.

Linden Vey scored twice, and Yannick Weber added a goal for Vancouver.

Burnside’s Mercado wins pro debut

Heavyweight Tony Mercado of the Burnside Boxing Club won his professional debut on Saturday night as part of “The Beginning,” a nine-bout card at St. Lucy’s banquet center.

Mercado defeated New Castle’s Ben Bechtol by TKO 30 seconds into the second round.

Calgary Stampeders win Grey Cup

VANCOUVER, British Columbia

Hamilton star Brandon Banks’ punt return for an apparent go-ahead touchdown in the final minute was wiped out by an illegal block, and the Calgary Stampeders held off the Tiger-Cats 20-16 in the Grey Cup.

Calgary won its seventh Canadian Football League title and first since 2008.

Bo Levi Mitchell was 25 for 34 for 334 yards for Calgary, backup Drew Tate had two 1-yard touchdown runs and Rene Parades made two field goals.

Hamilton’s Zach Collaros threw for 282 yards and a touchdown, a 45-yarder to Banks late in the first half.

After Paredes’ 20-yard field goal made it 20-7 in the third quarter, Hamilton’s Justin Medlock connected from 25, 12 and 37 yards in the fourth.

Jordan Spieth wins Australian Open by six

SYDNEY

Jordan Spieth made his first trip Down Under a successful one, shooting an 8-under 63 on Sunday to win the Australian Open by six strokes.

Spieth’s four-round total of 13-under 271 on the tough, windy Australian Golf Club made him the first American to win the Australian Open since Brad Faxon in 1993, when the 21-year-old Spieth was four months old.

Spieth birdied four holes on the front nine — three of them in a row — to lead by three after nine holes, then added four on the back nine, never threatening to lose his lead.

France wins biathlon World Cup mixed relay

OSTERSUND, Sweden

Double Olympic champion Martin Fourcade pulled away with a late sprint to give France a narrow victory over Norway in a mixed relay on Sunday in the first biathlon World Cup competition of the season.

Fourcade started the anchor leg 36 seconds behind the leaders but was in a three-way group with Norway and Germany coming into the stadium. He edged ahead of Norway’s Lars Helge Birkeland and Germany’s Simon Schempp to give France the win in 1 hour, 15 minutes, 5.5 seconds. Norway and third-place Germany were both 0.2 seconds behind.

The World Cup meet continues on Wednesday.
