A Cleveland man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after police say he sold the powerful narcotic fentanyl to a man who overdosed on the drug.

Jose Montanez-Roldan was arrested Friday.

afternoon. Court records show he was charged with involuntary manslaughter on Sunday.

Montanez-Roldan is accused of selling a fatal dose of fentanyl to 41-year-old Carlos Pettis, who died Wednesday at a hospital. The web site reports that a Cleveland police affidavit accuses Montanez-Roldan of selling Pettis what the man thought was heroin.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate more powerful than morphine. Authorities have issued numerous warnings to heroin users about the possibility that the drugs they buy could be tainted with fentanyl.

Court records don’t show an attorney for Montanez-Roldan.
