Holder to announce plan to target racial profiling
ATLANTA (AP) — U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said he plans to unveil new Justice Department guidance in the coming days aimed at ending racial profiling and ensuring fair and effective policing.
Holder was to announce the plan in a speech today at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. The Associated Press and other news outlets received advance copies.
The president instructed Holder to set up regional meetings on building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve in the wake of clashes between protesters and police in Ferguson, Missouri. Today’s meeting in Atlanta was the first.
Tensions between police and the community in Ferguson boiled over after a white police officer shot a black teenager in August. Protests turned violent again last week, after a grand jury declined to indict officer Darren Wilson in Michael Brown’s death.
