Community Legal Aid, a nonprofit law firm serving the civil legal needs of the low-income community, is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit Program in Mahoning County. Volunteers assist victims of domestic violence through the court process of obtaining a civil protection order. Training for volunteers is Sept. 26 and lasts eight hours. Man killed in crash

JACKSON CENTER, PA.

A Pittsburgh man was killed in a one-car accident in Mercer County at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. According to Pennsylvania State Police, 24-year-old Philip Richard Gross III was driving fast on state Route 965 near state Route 173 in Worth Township. Gross, who was not wearing his seatbelt, drove off the road in his 1996 Nissan Maxima after failing to make a turn and hit two large trees. Mercer County Deputy Coroner Robert Snyder pronounced Gross dead at the scene.

Painting class

MERCER, PA.

Munnell Run Farm, 747 Greenville Road, in conjunction with guest artist Lauren Sheridan, will offer a painting class in which guests will paint a 12-by-16-inch canvas with a scene of a “Whimsical Fall Tree.” The class will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 22. No art experience is required; all materials will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own brushes. Cost is $25; registration and payment are due by Sept. 15. Photo contest

NEW CASTLE, PA.

Amateur photographers have one last chance to display their photos of summer fun in Lawrence County and possibly win a cash prize. Janet Falotico, executive director of the Lawrence County Tourist Promotion Agency, said some of the photographs will be used in the agency’s promotional literature. Prizes are $200 for first place; $100 for second; $50 for third. Entries will be judged by the agency. Contestants must be at least 16. Deadline for submission is Sept. 30. Stolen-car arrest

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown police arrested Jamon Tyrell Bates, 41, of Youngstown at 3:55 p.m. Saturday on a charge of receiving stolen property.

Police were alerted to a stolen green Nissan Altima with Ohio temporary tags, taken by Bates, and noticed the car traveling northbound on Belmont Avenue on Saturday afternoon. They stopped Bates, the driver, and ordered him and the front passenger out of the car. Police said Bates was on parole. They transported him to the Mahoning County Jail. No court date has been set.

Home robbery

YOUNGSTOWN

A Volney Road resident told police she saw a man exit her front door as she returned home Saturday afternoon. When she asked him what he was doing and whether he had anything in his pockets, he fled her property, she said. The resident said a diamond ring worth $2,000 was gone when she went inside. She described the man as white, in his early 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with brown hair, and wearing black shorts, a gray T-shirt and a black ball cap.
