Girl, 9, dies after being trapped in sand

LINCOLN CITY, Ore.

A 9-year-old girl died when a sand hole collapsed on her at a beach, police in the Oregon coastal town of Lincoln City said.

Firefighters and police responded shortly after 5 p.m. Friday and found a group of people trying to dig the girl out, Lt. Jerry Palmer said. Officers helped extract the girl, who was identified Saturday as Isabel Grace Franks, from a large hole.

Police began CPR after Isabel was pulled free, unconscious and not breathing. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and ambulance medical teams took over CPR, and Isabel was taken to a hospital.

Ebola survivor: Make more ZMapp

MONROVIA, Liberia

A Liberian health worker who recovered from Ebola after receiving an experimental drug urged the manufacturer to speed up its production and send it to Africa, while crowds celebrated in the streets Saturday after authorities reopened a slum that had been barricaded for more than a week to try to contain the disease.

Physician’s assistant Kyndy Kobbah was expected to be released from hospital Saturday after she survived Ebola, which has been fatal in more than half the cases sweeping West Africa.

Kobbah urged the manufacturer of the experimental drug known as ZMapp to step up production. The company has said that all its supplies are exhausted and it will take months to make more.

5 miners still trapped; others are rescued

BONANZA, Nicaragua

Rescue workers and trapped miners alike frantically dug away at opposite sides of rock and mud that blocked a Nicaragua gold mine, finally succeeding in freeing at least 20 men. Efforts to reach five miners still missing continued Saturday.

Bonanza Mayor Alexander Alvarado, a former miner who participated in the rescue efforts, said it took about 100 men working around the clock to reach those trapped and even then, it took about another two hours to bring the first miner out to safety.

Mirta Lagos, an official of the ruling Sandinista Party who was at the site, said five families reported they have a miner missing.

Teen test-driving Lamborghini dies

MOUNT SINAI, N.Y.

A New York teen taking a test drive of a family friend’s Lamborghini has died after crashing the high-powered sports car into a guardrail.

Police say 18-year-old Samuel Shepard was taking the car for a spin on a county road in Mount Sinai on Long Island early Friday when he lost control. The car’s owner, Michael Power, was a passenger in the car and was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries.

Det. Sgt. Michael Fitzharris tells Newsday that excessive speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Calif. OKs measure to ban plastic bags

SACRAMENTO, Calif.

California lawmakers have approved a measure that would make the state the first to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.

SB270 cleared the Senate on a 22-15 vote Friday and sent to Gov. Jerry Brown. It was approved by the Assembly a day earlier.

The bill by Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of Los Angeles would prohibit single-use plastic bags at grocery stores and large pharmacies in 2015 and at convenience stores in 2016.

It includes $2 million in loans to help manufacturers shift to producing reusable bags and lets grocers charge 10 cents each for paper and reusable bags.
