WARREN

The Sutliff Museum’s fall lecture series will begin Sept. 16 with “Antique Boxes,” presented by Richard Webb, an antiques dealer, appraiser and collector.

The lecture will begin with coffee and pastries at 9 a.m. in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Ave. The program will begin at 9:45 a.m. It is free and reservations are not required.

Webb, of Kinsman, will present histories, uses and values of antique boxes that people might have in their collections. Snuff boxes, Quaker boxes, jewelry boxes, cheese boxes and many more kinds of containers from the past will be discussed, and Webb will show examples from his collection.

Audience members are invited to bring in one or two boxes from their own collections for Webb to discuss and appraise.

The second program, “Quilts of the Civil War Era, Old and New,” will be Oct. 17 at 9 a.m. in the Thomas Meeting Room, presented by Susan Catanzarito of Renfrew, Pa.

Catanzarito will show authentic period quilts and reproductions that she has made for teaching purposes. She will discuss the history, origins, values and authenticating of quilts from the 1860s. Audience members are invited to bring in one quilt each from their own collections for Catanzarito to discuss and evaluate.

Sara Hume, curator of the Kent State University Museum in Kent, will give the third and final lecture of the series, a program titled “Women and Fashion in a World at War.” The date has not yet been set.

The presentation will focus on the World War I era. Attendees are encouraged to bring in pieces of clothing or accessories from the early 20th century, up to about 1920, for Hume to discuss and informally appraise.

The Sutliff Museum, located on the second floor of the Warren-Trumbull library, will be open after each lecture. To arrange tours or for further information, call 330-395-6575.
