POLICE CALLS

A summary of recent criminal activity in Poland and Boardman townships:

POLAND

Aug. 22

Identity fraud: A Boardwalk Drive woman discovered $5,000 worth of unauthorized activity to her credit-card account.

Aug. 23

Arrest: A traffic stop near Western Reserve Road and state Route 170 led to the arrest of 58-year-old Joseph Thomas of Del Ray Street, New Middletown, on a charge of operating a vehicle impaired.

Aug. 26

Breaking and entering: Someone broke into Essroc, a cement company at 6969 Center Road, via a rear door.

BOARDMAN

Aug. 22

Burglary: Took place in the 4300 block of Chester Drive. Also, someone tried to steal a 2007 minivan.

Extortion: A Boardman-Canfield Road man who had reported his wallet lost or stolen reported later learning that a woman posted a Facebook message asking for money before returning the wallet.

Identity fraud: A Yellow Creek Drive man told officers he received documentation from the Ohio Department of Taxation that indicated someone had fraudulently used his Social Security number to file an income-tax return.

Theft: A man stole $230 worth of merchandise, including accessories for a Bluetooth device, from Walgreens Pharmacy, 525 E. Midlothian Blvd.

Theft: A $210 cellphone was taken from a vehicle in the 4500 block of Montrose Avenue.

Assault: Amber P. Rothwell, 30, of Thalia Avenue, Boardman, faced a simple-assault charge after a Thalia Avenue man alleged Rothwell punched him numerous times in the arm and cheek after he had told her several times to leave his residence as she argued with his daughter.

Harassment: Authorities arrested 63-year-old Katherine L. MacDonald at her Yarmouth Lane residence on an Austintown warrant charging the Boardman woman with telecommunications harassment.

Drugs: Police responded to a suspicious vehicle at the Southern Park Mall before charging Aaron S. Agee of Catalina Avenue, Youngstown, with aggravated trafficking in drugs, a fourth-degree felony. Agee, 21, had seven wrapped bags of suspected marijuana totaling 12.8 grams in his car and in the vicinity of a 1-year-old child, a report showed.

Fraud: An Amberwood Trail man reportedly gave his Social Security number to a caller claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service, who said the accuser had made an error on his 2012 income-tax return and had to pay $4,500 or face a warrant for his arrest. The man later discovered it was a scam.

Theft: Michael C. Mele, 27, of Wingate Road, Poland, was charged in the theft of a 51-inch plasma TV valued at $398 from Walmart, 1300 Doral Drive.

Theft by deception: Marqus A. Koranteng, 20, of Dover Drive, Boardman, faced a misdemeanor theft-by-deception charge after a loss-prevention official with T.J. Maxx and More, 717 Boardman-Poland Road, alleged Koranteng, an employee, twice cashed each of four of his paychecks, resulting in a $630 loss.

Theft/forgery: A Wildwood Drive woman learned that someone had stolen a check in her mother’s name and forged the mother’s signature.

Threats: A manager of a Boardman-Poland Road restaurant told officers someone called the eatery 50 to 60 times and at one point threatened to blow up the building to get back at an employee.

Misuse of a credit card: A Maple Drive woman alleged a family member stole her bank card and made $417.50 worth of unauthorized purchases before returning it to her.

Possible identity theft: An Eisenhower Drive man reported having received a $589 bill from Alcoa, Tenn., for a supposed emergency-room visit at a Phoenix hospital, even though he’s never been to Phoenix.

Theft: A Lisbon woman reported a lamp, a table and other property stolen while renting a residence in the 50 block of Woodview Avenue.

Aug. 23

Aggravated menacing: A Market Street woman told police someone had posted a disturbing message on Facebook in which she was advised to kill herself.

Arrest: Lawrence M. Csernik, 54, of Lynn Mar Avenue, Boardman, was charged with operating a vehicle impaired after police had pulled him over on South Avenue.

Citation: After being stopped near South Avenue, 19-year-old Breaeja L. Bell of Douglas Avenue, Youngstown, was given a minor-misdemeanor citation charging marijuana possession.

Domestic violence: Joseph J. Hardy, 32, of West Glenaven Avenue, Youngstown, was booked at the Mahoning County jail on a charge related to a May 14 situation at a Market Street motel in which an employee had reported finding a large amount of blood in a room. Later, a woman who reportedly was in the room with Hardy was found with numerous injuries but refused to cooperate with authorities, they said.

Theft: Salem police relinquished custody to township authorities of Jack R. Kimble, 40, and Carol M. Kimble, 42, both of East Sixth Street, Salem. Both faced several theft charges, including one related to a June 3 shoplifting situation at Kmart, 1209 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A Brandon Avenue man said a former friend refused to return a $450 laptop computer and a coat to him.

Aggravated menacing: A South Avenue woman told police a man threatened to harm her son.

Theft: A woman who had left her purse next to her vehicle at the Southern Park Mall returned to discover the purse missing.

Theft by deception: A Carter Circle woman reported that a man she had met via an online dating site tricked her into sending $1,180 to him in Bronx, N.Y., after he claimed he needed the money to care for a sick relative.

Theft: Lavette Boone, 49, of Elm Street, Struthers, was charged with stealing a pair of women’s jeans and other merchandise totaling $107 from Kohl’s, 383 Boardman-Poland Road.

Theft: A $115 bicycle was stolen from a front yard in the 100 block of Homestead Drive.

Theft: A woman stole a $35 pair of women’s dress sandals from Payless Shoesource, 48 Boardman-Poland Road.

Aug. 24

Assault: A 13-year-old township boy faced a simple-assault charge after a woman alleged the teen had punched a 12-year-old boy near his left eye. The victim was taken to an emergency room because of problems seeing clearly, a police report stated.

Burglary: To a residence in the 50 block of Maple Drive after a rear door had been opened. Stolen were a 65-inch flat-screen TV and an iPad device.

Drugs: A traffic stop on South Avenue resulted in minor-misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession against Aaron M.M. Kacenski, 20, of Taylor Avenue, New Waterford; Matthew P. Hardenbrook, 20, of state Route 517, Columbiana; and Kristopher A. Dean of West Martin Street, East Palestine.

Menacing: A Youngstown woman said another woman threatened to punch the accuser’s 8-year-old son and other children while driving on Market Street.

Theft: Aileen Fontanez, 34, of West Truesdale Avenue, Youngstown, and Jose O. Fontanez-Rodriguez, 48, same address, were charged with removing items from a donations area at Goodwill Industries Inc., 285 Boardman-Canfield Road.

Assault: A Youngstown woman driving on Southern Boulevard told police that an irate motorist tossed a hairbrush into the accuser’s vehicle, resulting in a gash to the bridge of her nose.

Drugs: A traffic stop near an Operating a Vehicle Impaired checkpoint on U.S. Route 224 resulted in 36-year-old Shaun M. Uscianowski’s arrest on felony charges of trafficking in drugs and drug possession as well as misdemeanor charges of carrying a concealed weapon and possession of drug paraphernalia. Uscianowski, of Unity Road, New Springfield, had a small knife, various pills, suspected marijuana and a scale with suspected drug residue, police said.

Aug. 25

Theft: Diapers and baby lotion were among items a man stole from Dollar General, 859 E. Midlothian Blvd.

Theft: A wallet was taken from a car in the 4000 block of Stratford Road.

Arrest: A traffic stop near Shields Road led to the arrest of 51-year-old Vincent J. Digiacomo of Shields, Boardman. He was wanted on warrants charging failure to appear in court and a probation violation.

Arrest: Carla T. Edmonds of West Warren Avenue, Youngstown, was taken into custody during a traffic stop on South Avenue. The 43-year-old Edmonds was wanted on a Niles warrant accusing her of failing to appear in court on a larceny charge.

Theft: Police charged 54-year-old Raymond L. Edwards of South Truesdale Avenue, Youngstown, in the theft of $226 worth of items, including cologne, from Sears.

Criminal damaging: A key was used to damage a vehicle’s passenger-side door in the 700 block of Boardman-Poland Road.

Criminal mischief: Someone entered and ransacked a car in the 4200 block of Oak Knoll Drive.

Theft: Authorities at the Trumbull County jail picked up 38-year-old Michael J. Kohut III on warrants charging him with six counts of theft, including one in which Kohut, of North Bonair Avenue, Youngstown, was accused of stealing a $599 toolkit May 4 from Lowe’s, 1100 Doral Drive.

Theft: A resident at a Boardman- Canfield Road care center reported the theft of an Ohio identification card.

Theft: Someone in the 60 block of Wilda Avenue took $70 from a vehicle.

Aug. 26

Breaking and entering: Someone cut part of a fence before breaking into Spectrum Metal Finishing Inc., 535 Bev Road, and removing $5,000 worth of aluminum.

Domestic violence: Shawn A. Wolford, 30, of Wolosyn Circle, Boardman, was charged with the crime after having been arrested at Boardman Area Court. A woman alleged that during an argument, Wolford had tossed a cellphone and struck her upper-back area.

Theft: A woman in her mid-50s stole an undetermined quantity of merchandise from Family Dollar, 4028 South Ave.

Identity fraud: A Sugertree Drive woman reported having gotten a letter from the Ohio Department of Taxation addressed to her deceased husband that claimed his income-tax return was under review and that asked for further documentation. Later, the woman told police, a caller claiming to represent the IRS said she needed to pay $3,890 within 45 minutes.

Theft: Two women in their mid-30s stole $300 worth of clothing from Sears.

Theft: A former employee of a Boardman-Canfield Road business reportedly failed to return an expensive vacuum cleaner.

Domestic violence: Austintown police handed 29-year-old Matthew J. Treharn to township authorities after his girlfriend alleged that Treharn, of Old Oxford Lane, Boardman, had slapped her face during an argument.
