Man runs from police, leaves gun behind

A man who police said ran away from them into a house and left a gun there is in the Mahoning County jail on $40,000 bond after his arraignment in municipal court Friday.

Marquise Shelton, 22, of Youngstown, was arraigned before Magistrate Anthony Sertick on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest after he was arrested earlier this week by members of the Mahoning Valley Task Force.

A task-force report said members were on patrol as part of the Violence Interruption Program when they spotted Shelton in a car on South Avenue about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.

One of the task-force members said they went to pull the car over because they know Shelton does not have a driver’s license.

Instead, he led them on a chase to Potomac Avenue, where he stopped the car and ran into a home. He did not come out until city police surrounded the home.

The homeowner said he did not know Shelton and did not want him inside. In a bedroom where Shelton hid, task-force members found a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun, which the homeowner said was not his.

Shelton has been in jail since his arrest.
