Poland High School announces 2014 HOF class


Poland Seminary High School announced that it will be inducting five new members to the Poland Athletic Hall of Fame this year.

The induction ceremony will take place Sept. 19 prior to the Poland versus Columbus Bishop Waterson football game. There will also be a Hall of Fame tailgate party prior to the game. All former coaches and inductees are invited to attend.

This year’s class includes:

Jim Timko (1986) - Timko was a two sport athlete in baseball and basketball. In baseball, Timko was a three year starter and earned three varsity letters. During his senior season he was 9-1 with a 1.20 ERA. He also led the team in batting with a .378 batting average and was named first team All State. During his years on the Bulldog baseball team, they won three straight MVC titles and earned a trip to the regional finals in 1986. He was first team all M.V.C. his junior and senior seasons. In basketball, Timko was a two year letter winner and started at point guard. He was All-MVC his senior year. He went on to play baseball at Youngstown State University where he pitched and earned three varsity letters.

Jim Knopp (1989) - Knopp has the distinction of being the first gymnast to be inducted into the Poland Athletic Hall of Fame. While in High School, Knopp earned four letters for gymnastics. He placed 17th All Around at the OSHAA State meet as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore, second as a junior and was the State All Around champion as a senior. Later that year he became the 1989 National Champion. Knopp earned a scholarship to attend The Ohio State University where he was an OSU Scholar Athlete, Academic All-American, four year letter winner and four time All-American. In 1992 he was the Big Ten High Bar champion and first team all Big 10 selection. In 1993 Knopp earned the Big 10 Medal of Honor, was the Big 10 champion on the pommel horse and parallel bars and was the first team all Big 10 selection. In 1994 Knopp was selected to represent the United States as a member of the US National Team at the World University Games. He stayed on at OSU as an assistant coach that same year.

Katie Lamport Glatzer (1999) - A four year letter winner for the Lady Bulldogs softball team. She started as pitcher all four years and led the Lady Bulldogs to four straight MAC championships, four Sectional Titles and three District Titles. Along the way Lamport Glatzer racked up 14 school pitching records. For her achievements, she earned second team all conference as a freshman and first team all conference her sophomore through senior years. As a junior, she earned second team All-State honors and as a senior she was first team All-State. Upon graduation, Lamport Glatzer attended Malone University where she went on to star as a pitcher for the Pioneers. While at Malone, she earned four letters and was NCSAA All-American Honorable Mention as a sophomore and was first team All NCSAA All-American her senior year.

Jessica Marino (2000) - A three sport athlete excelling in soccer, tennis and track. She was also a junior varsity cheerleader. In soccer, Marino was a four year varsity letter winner and team captain as a senior. She earned second team All-Conference honors as a junior and was also first team All-Division and first Team All-District. As a senior, she was first team All-Conference, All-District, and All-State. She led the Bulldogs to a third round playoff appearance in 1999 and was named District Player of the Year. In track, Marino joined the team as a senior and earned one varsity letter. In the long jump, she was a 2000 State Qualifier and set the school’s record at 17 feet. Marino also earned two varsity letters in tennis and was named team captain as a senior. She was also the class valedectorian.

Upon graduation, Marino accepted a soccer scholarship to the University of Richmond where she played for four years and was team co-captain as a senior. She helped lead the Spiders to a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2002 and scored the lone goal in a 1-0 upset over Clemson to advance in the first round of tournament play. Post-collegiate, Marino continued her athletic career in the sport of triathlon where she qualified and competed in the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii in 2013 finishing with a time of 10:32:23.

Kristy Gaudiose (2003) - was a two-sport athlete for Poland Seminary High School in basketball and softball. In basketball, Gaudiose was a four year letter winner and graduated with four records in basketball. She is Poland’s all time leading scorer. She earned first team All MAC honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. Other honors obtained during her career were first team All-Ohio, All Northeast Inland, All Northeast Inland Player of the year, The Vindicator All Area Team and she was selected to the Ohio North-South and Mahoning County All Star teams. She was the MVP of the Midland Tournament.

In softball, Gaudiose lettered her freshman and junior year and was All MAC twice. She missed her sophomore year due to injury and her senior year she chose to focus on earning a basketball scholarship.

Upon graduation, she attended Youngstown State University on a full basketball scholarship. Gaudiose currently ranks 10th in YSU’s history for most consecutive free throws (17) and for most three pointers in a career. She also shares the record for most three pointers in a game (7).
