Canfield Speech and Debate team excels at National Tournament

Neighbors | Submitted.The Canfield Speech and Debate team competed at the 2014 National Speech and Debate Association's National Tournament in Overland Park, Kan. during the week of June 16. This tournament saw competition from more than 4,000 students representing 1,100 schools throughout the United States. Canfield qualified 10 students to the National Tournament, the most in its history. The Canfield Speech and Debate team competed at the 2014 National Speech and Debate Association’s National Tournament in Overland Park, Kan. during the week of June 16.

This tournament saw competition from more than 4,000 students representing more than 1,100 schools throughout the United States. Canfield qualified ten students to the national tournament, the most in its history. Students that qualified were Julie Gemmel and Rayann Atway (seniors, Public Forum Debate), Will Brown and Kareem Soliman (seniors, Public Forum Debate), Stephen Gant and Maleck Saleh (juniors, Public Forum Debate), Arjun Subramanyam (senior, United States Extemp), Michael Stefanick (freshman, Drama), Alec Kan (sophomore, Student Congress) and Cameron Maras (junior, International Extemp). Additionally, Stephen Gant and Maleck Saleh earned recognition for being in the top 32 in Public Forum Debate and Arjun Subramanyam was in the top 60 in United States Extemp.

The Canfield Speech and Debate team is under the direction of Jeremy Hamilton with assistants Caitlin Beckett, Carole Bogar, Terri Fleming, Sami Nesnidol, Tim Nesnidol and Jacob Schriner-Briggs

helping guide this year’s team of 84 students. The team also finished in the top ten at the Ohio High School Speech League’s State Tournament for the sixth consecutive season.
