Campbell cops probe break-in and burglary

CAMPBELL

A Campbell woman, 57, reported to police at 5:11 p.m. Tuesday that more than $2,000 worth of belongings had been taken from her and her husband's vehicles. Police estimated approximately $2,104 had been taken.

Items missing included high-priced running shoes, designer sunglasses, designer glasses, cordless sander, car speakers, multiple car chargers and $75-worth in gift cards.

The woman told officers that both vehicles were parked in her Porter Avenue driveway. She said she suspects the theft occurred Monday night when she noticed a light go off outside late in the evening, but she said she did not see anyone at the time.

Campbell police reported there have been numerous vehicle thefts the past few days. Police said the have scheduled people to combat the problem.

In another matter, Campbell police arrested William Dewitt Clinton, 51 of Campbell, for burglary and obstructing official business a little past 2 a.m. Wednesday. Police received a call from a local man at 137 Regent St., advising someone was attempting to break in his back door.

Officers arrived not long after the call was made and saw damage to the rear door. Officers looked for suspicious people on foot around the area and noticed a male in a black T-shirt and jeans, running toward Oxford Street.

A police dog came to track down the direction of the suspect. Officers tracked him down and transported him to the police department. Police said he looked like a suspect for a burglary on Princess Street on Monday.

Police asked if Clinton was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and he said he used crack cocaine the previous day. Clinton confessed to the burglary at 137 Regent, police said, and was transported to Mahoning County Jail. He was held without bond and has a mandatory court appearance on Friday at 9 a.m.
