The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield Post is continuing its investigation today of two traffic accidents that involved Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office vehicles that occurred within minutes of each other on U.S. Route 224 on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a patrol release, the first accident occurred at 2:43 p.m. on Route 224 at Hillside Drive. Deputy John Tomaino Jr., driving a 2007 Ford Mustang cruiser, was responding to a backup call from the Canfield Police Department for a person wanted on a warrant.
Tomaino was traveling east on Route 224 with his lights and siren activated, while 47-year-old Andrea M. Elberty of Canfield was traveling south on Hillside Drive in a 2014 sport utility vehicle and 88-year-old Lothar W. Link of Canfield was traveling north on Hillside Drive in a 2003 car.
The patrol release said what happened is still under investigation.
Tomaino, Elberty and Link were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center. Their conditions were not available at press time Tuesday night.
At 2:48 p.m., Deputy Jason Boggs was traveling south on Fairground Boulevard in a 2014 sport utility vehicle — he was responding to the previous crash — while 32-year-old Christina R.
