Sheriff's office and Boardman cops: Who's on first?

BOARDMAN

After being arrested on two warrants out of the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office Monday, a Boardman man was released from custody because sheriff's office and township officers could not determine who was responsible for his transportation.

According to a police report, Vincent Digiacomo, 51, of Shields Road, was arrested by township police after an officer made a traffic stop for a vehicle in which he was a passenger.

The officer determined that Digiacomo was under suspension and had two active warrants for a probation violation and failure to appear.

The officer transported Digiacomo to the sheriff's office, where it was determined that Digiacomo needed medical attention.

A lieutenant with the sheriff's office told the township police officer it was the township's responsibility to take Digiacomo to the hospital and then back to the sheriff's offfice, and determined that sheriff's deputies were not responsible, according to the report.

Township police determined it was not their responsibility to transport Digiacomo, because the warrants were out of county courts.

The sheriff's office then decided to release Digiacomo from custody before processing him, and advised township police that the warrants would still be active.

Digiacomo declined a township police officer's offer to call an ambulance for him.
