Monster truck show returns to Canfield Fair

They’re back.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, more than 40,000 pounds of monster trucks will take over the grandstand at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The two-hour-long show will be preceded by a 6 p.m. meet-and-greet session with the drivers.

George Roman III, a fair board director who manages advertising and the grandstand, along with special attractions and concessions, said he is looking forward to again having a monster truck show at the Canfield Fair. It has been several years since the last one — simply because he and other fair directors were looking in “other directions with grandstand entertainment.”

This area, though, seems to like “motor-type shows,” Roman said, adding that he hopes the Lucas Oil Monster Truck Nationals at the 168th fair will be “another way to satisfy the public.”

“They’re always fun to watch,” Roman added.

Featured monster trucks in the show are Lucas Oil Bigfoot, Raminator, Rammunition and Samson. Megasaurus, described by promoters as a “hungry 35,000-pound beast [that] chomps cars and flings fire,” will also make an appearance, as well as a custom-built golf cart that uses an engine from an Army helicopter and can play 18 holes in just under five minutes.

All seating is general admission, and tickets are available to purchase online at www.canfieldfair.com or in person at the fair’s box office, which is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during fair week. Admission for adults is $10; children under 12 are admitted for $5.

Craig L. Myers, fair board president, said he, too, is excited about the Lucas Oil Monster Truck Nationals and about the return of monster trucks to the fairgrounds. He noted that monster-truck shows took place there for several summers in a row, but that with so many other activities, they began to lose some attendance.

This time, though, is a “win-win for everybody,” Myers said.

“I think it’s going to be a good thing,” he noted. “It is really a good show for the families and the kids.”

Also at the grandstand will be a demolition derby Friday and a truck and tractor pull Saturday.

For the demolition derby, reserve grandstand tickets are $10, while youth tickets, for children from age 7 to 12 are $6. Reserve track seats for the truck and tractor pull are $14 and reserve grandstand seats are $12; youth tickets are $7.
