Cleveland couple charged in 18-month-old son’s death

CLEVELAND (AP) — A Cleveland couple are charged with aggravated murder in the July death of their 18-month-old son.

Twenty-five-year-old Anthony Phelps and 22-year-old Anika McCorvey-Phelps had an initial court appearance today.

A Cleveland police report says the parents called 911 on July 21 to report that Abel McCorvey-Phelps was choking on food. Paramedics arrived and took the toddler to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Homicide investigators noted at the time that it didn’t appear the toddler had any injuries. An autopsy revealed Abel died of massive internal bleeding and blunt impact injuries to the skeleton, spinal cord and soft tissue.
