‘Best of Fair’ contest set for Canfield Fair

CANFIELD

The Canfield Fair offers a seemingly endless variety of attractions, from rides, games or the ever-popular “fair food.” To be asked to choose a favorite among them can be challenging, but that is just what 2014 attendees will be doing with the “Best of Fair” Contest.

“Best of Fair” is sponsored by Fred Martin Ford and allows fairgoers to vote for their favorites in six categories: Best Sandwich, Best French Fries, Best Treat, Best Novelty Food, Best Ride and Best Game.

Votes can be entered on the fair’s website, www.canfieldfair.com, including the mobile version. You also can use the QR code posted on signs at each vendor’s booth or location to cast a vote.

This year’s fair runs from Wednesday through Labor Day, Sept. 1.

Suspect arrested

Police arrested a man about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in connection with the July 4 robbery of the Family Dollar Store at 2224 Market St.

Dennis Helbert Ray, 53, of Youngstown, was taken into custody behind the southeast corner of Delason and Overland avenues, police reports said. He was arrested on a warrant charging him with carrying concealed weapons, being a felon in possession of a firearm, aggravated robbery and possession of dangerous drugs.

He was taken to the Mahoning County jail.

Reports from the robbery said a man pointed a double-barreled shotgun at the clerk and demanded the cash drawer, then ran out of the store.

Police set up a perimeter but could find no one. A police dog did find the gun, a razor blade and a box that was used to conceal the gun on St. Louis Avenue.
