Mayor, prison officials meet about protest

YOUNGSTOWN

Mayor John McNally met Wednesday with officials from the private prison where last week prisoners staged a protest, regarding proper notification procedures.

Under the city’s agreement with Corrections Corporation of America, the Nashville-based company that runs the prison on the city’s East Side, the city is to be notified immediately of any unusual events, McNally said. The police chief and law director also are to receive a written report within 24 hours, he said.

Although those steps weren’t followed last week, McNally said the company assured him proper steps will be followed should future events occur. The protest dealt with inmates’ issues with the quality of health care and food at the facility, the mayor said.

Prosecutor files termination entry

WARREN

A prosecutor has filed a termination entry in the misdemeanor criminal case that accused a Trumbull County jail corrections officer of conducting an illegal body-cavity search on a jail inmate earlier this month.

The entry filed Tuesday by Nicholas Graham, assistant law director, says the entry terminates prosecution of the charge in Warren Municipal Court but allows it to be refiled at a later date.

The corrections officer, Sheila Cullins, was arrested on the charge Tuesday morning but released pending an arraignment hearing.

The termination entry was filed later in the day.

Trumbull County Sheriff Thomas Altiere said Maj. Thomas Stewart of the sheriff’s office is re-examining the matter with the possibility of filing a charge later. Cullins remains on paid administrative leave, Altiere said.
