Local players join YSU women’s basketball

YOUNGSTOWN

Two walk-ons from the Mahoning Valley have joined the Youngstown State women’s basketball program for the 2014-15 season, Penguins head coach John Barnes announced.

Sarah Cash , a 6-foot-1 freshman forward who graduated from Lordstown High, joined the program during the summer and was able to go through team workouts. Ashley Kirila joined the program officially on Wednesday with the start of YSU’s fall semester. Kirila is a 6-foot forward who graduated from Brookfield High.

Cash was a third team All-Ohioan in Division IV as a senior at Lordstown when she averaged 17.8 points. Cash was a first-team all-state selection as a junior when she averaged 22.5 points and 17 rebounds.

Kirila was routinely honored among the top players in Trumbull County in her career for the Warriors. She was a second-team all-county selection in each of her last two years.

Canfield tennis event draws big Ohio names

CANFIELD

The annual Cardinal Doubles Classic, featuring four of the premier teams in Ohio’s girls tennis, will take place Saturday at Canfield High School and Canfield Swim Club.

In addition to Canfield, 2013 Division I state team champion Upper Arlington, Division II state team runner-up Hathaway Brown and perennial state power Magnificat will compete. Upper Arlington has won the Classic three years in a row.

Mineral Ridge to scrimmage at Niles

Mineral Ridge’s football scrimmage on Friday has been moved from Mineral Ridge to Niles high school. The scrimmage is still set for 7 p.m. against Garrettsville Garfield.

Las Vegas spoils night for Mo’ne in LLWS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.

Dallan Cave and Brennan Holligan hit two-run homers, lefty reliever Austin Kryszczuk got out of two big jams, and Las Vegas beat Philadelphia and star pitcher Mo’ne Davis 8-1 in the Little League World Series on Wednesday night. That puts Las Vegas in Saturday’s U.S. title game and sends Philadelphia into an elimination game on Thursday night against Chicago’s Jackie Robinson team.

Also Wednesday, Jae Yeong Hwang’s go-ahead solo homer in the sixth led South Korea past Japan 4-2. South Korea advanced to the International Championship game. Japan will face Mexico on Thursday to determine South Korea’s opponent on Saturday.

Swisher out after surgery on both knees

CLEVELAND

Indians designated hitter Nick Swisher was scheduled for surgery on both knees late Wednesday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season. Swisher, who is in the second year of a four-year, $56 million contract with the Indians, has been on the 15-day disabled list with knee soreness since Aug. 10 and also served an earlier DL stint with similar discomfort from May 27 through June 11. Swisher’s knee pain not only persisted, but also showed signs of worsening as he began visibly limping around the clubhouse following games as the season progressed.

US routs Dominicans in basketball exhibition

NEW YORK

With Derrick Rose sitting out, Kyrie Irving started and made all five shots, scoring 12 points as the U.S. national basketball team beat the Dominican Republic 105-62 on Wednesday night in an exhibition game. James Harden also scored 12 in limited playing time for the Americans.

US women score 3 in 2nd half, beat Swiss, 4-1

CARY, N.C.

Megan Rapinoe scored just three minutes into the game, and the United States got three goals in the second half to beat Switzerland 4-1 Wednesday night. Carli Lloyd made a penalty kick early in the second half, Christen Press scored in the 77th minute and Abby Wambach got her 168th career score in the 87th.
