YSU Hall of Famer to enter OSU shrine

Former Rayen School football player and Youngstown State football coach Ralph Wolf will be enshrined in the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in September. Wolf will be joined by football players Troy Smith, Antoine Winfield and Bob Vogel along with seven other student-athletes and two coaches in the 2014 class.

The class will be introduced during halftime of the Ohio State football game against Cincinnati on Sept. 27.

Wolf was a two-time team MVP (1936-37) playing center and defensive line and was a first-team All-American in 1937. He maintained close to a 4.0 GPA in the engineering program and was president of the junior class.

Wolf was inducted into the YSU Hall of Fame in 1985 for his 31-year stint as an assistant coach under Dwight “Dike” Beede. Wolf arrived at YSU the year after Beede in 1939 and left the day Beede retired.

Canfield girls golf sets school scoring record

CANFIELD

The Canfield girls golf team set a school record in winning the George Valentine Invitational Monday at Ashland Brookside Golf Course.

Tournament medalist Christina Cooper led the Cardinals with a score of 70.

She got great support from Kerra Loomis with a 75, Kaci Carpenter with a 78 and Gillian Cerimele with an 81 as Canfield scored a team total of 304, 21 strokes ahead of runner-up Dover.

The previous school record was 314 set last year in the same event. Individual scores a year ago were 77 by Michele Whiteleather and Loomis, 79 by Olivia DeMartino and 81 by Cooper.

Basketball officials class starts Sept. 15

YOUNGSTOWN

Those interested in becoming high school basketball officials can attend an OHSAA officiating class beginning Sept. 15. High School students may enroll in an OHSAA officiating class and obtain a Class 3 permit upon successful completion. Minimum age is 14 for a student to apply for an officiating class.

Community Cup events resume on weekend

YOUNGSTOWN

The 25th annual Youngstown Area Community Cup resumes this weekend with no entry fee for any of the events.

On Friday, a hot shot basketball competition and four swimming races wll take place at the Central YMCA in downtown Youngstwon.

Saturday’s schedule includes a golf scramble at Mill Creek Golf Course and a bowling tournament at Camelot Lanes.

The final event of the weekend will be a volleyball tournament Sunday at the Central YMCA.

The Community Cup is a program of the YMCA of Youngstown that has involved over 80 businesses and organizations and thousands of employees participating in 17 athletic events.

The final day of the 2014 Community Cup is Sept. 6 in Mill Creek Park, with the winners in each division being awarded their trophy Cup.

Springfield, Salem play in Jamboree Game

Springfield High will play host to Salem in a football Jamboree Game at 7 p.m. Friday.

All tickets will cost $4 and can be purchased at the gate.

Blatt adds Drew to Cavs’ coaching staff

CLEVELAND

First-year Cavaliers coach David Blatt has hired former Milwaukee coach Larry Drew as one of his assistants.

Blatt will have Drew, Jim Boylan, Bret Brielmaier and James Posey on the bench with him along with Tyronn Lue, named an associate head coach in June.

Drew went 15-67 in his only season in Milwaukee. He was expected to get a second year but was fired so the Bucks could hire Jason Kidd.
