Man who started ice bucket challenge in Mass. dies in diving accident

BOSTON (AP) — Funeral arrangements have been set for a man from Massachusetts who died after diving off a building into Nantucket Harbor.

Stephen Greeley, a family spokesman, says the wake for 27-year-old Corey Griffin will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Cohasset. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony’s.

Greeley described Griffin as an energetic booster for several local charities. Most recently, he said Griffin raised $150,000 for the charity benefiting Peter Frates, a former college classmate who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

Frates’ family and friends launched the “ice-bucket challenge” to raise awareness and money for ALS research after he was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disease in 2012.
