Quinby Park event set next Sunday

Staff report

WARREN

The Second Chance Exposure League will host a Rededication Day and 3-on-3 basketball tournament from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday to celebrate the league’s ongoing revitalization of Quinby Park on Austin Avenue Southwest.

The park was established in honor of and named after Ephraim Quinby, the founder of Warren. The last recorded improvements of the park were completed in July 1956, until the Second Chance Exposure League’s recent renovations there. These include upgrading basketball courts and hoops, removing weeds, repaving blacktop and replacing bleachers.

After the event, the group will continue to improve and update so the park is of use to the community.

The event will include a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. At 2 p.m., there will be team sign-ins and overviews of introductions and rules. Games will take place about every half-hour, and the championship game is planned for 7 p.m. A dunk contest will be offered before the championship from about 6:25 to 7 p.m.

A park-rededication ceremony will take place from 5 to 5:30 p.m. with guest speakers. Mayor Doug Franklin will give a welcome and an overview of the park’s history, and at the close of the ceremony, he will perform a ribbon-cutting on three trees representing the past, present and future.

Local religious leaders also will speak about redefining community and working toward common goals. A moment of silence will honor people the community has lost, and a prayer will focus on the city’s future.
