The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting residents of Mahoning and Columbiana counties to form teams and register to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 11 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown tate University.

The walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30a.m.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 600 communities.

According to organizers, the walk calls on participants of all ages to share their voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, entertainment and other activities.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, according to the association.

The Greater East Ohio Area Chapter provides education, guidance, referral information and support for the 60,000 people with Alzheimer’s and 250,000 caregivers in the service area.

Those interested in participating in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s may register online at http://act.alz.org/youngstown2014, or by calling 330-533-3300.

There is no cost to sign up; however, walkers are encouraged to seek donations from family members, friends, co-workers and other contacts. For more information, visit alz.org/walk or call Helen Paes, Development Coordinator, at 330-533-3300 or e-mail hpaes@alz.org.
