1057: Macbeth, King of Scots, is killed in battle by Malcolm, the eldest son of King Duncan, whom Macbeth had slain.

1483: The Sistine Chapel is consecrated by Pope Sixtus IV.

1812: The Battle of Fort Dearborn takes place as Potawatomi warriors attack a U.S. military garrison of about 100 people. (Most of the garrison was killed, while the remainder were taken prisoner.)

1914: The Panama Canal officially opens as the SS Ancon crosses the just-completed waterway between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

1935: Humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post are killed when their airplane crashes near Point Barrow in the Alaska Territory.

1939: The MGM musical “The Wizard of Oz” opens at the Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

1989: Dr. Richard D. Murray of Youngstown defends himself before the Ohio State Medical Board, saying his practice of prescribing steroids for weightlifters was no different than doctors prescribing birth control pills to healthy women.

Customers of the Mercer, Pa., Water Co. are told they may have to continue boiling their drinking water for another two months while a new holding tank is being built.

A senior at Champion High School is suing the school and his algebra teacher, saying he was not warned that he was failing the fourth quarter of algebra, a failure that made him ineligible to play football in the first quarter of the new school year.

1974: Youngstown’s assistant chief of detectives, the police chief’s secretary and two patrolmen are injured, none seriously, in three auto accidents involving police cars.

Ohio’s home gardeners, who planted larger gardens in response to rising food prices, say much of their produce is going to waste because of a shortage in canning jars and lids. Food freezers are in short supply as well.

1964: Youngstown University confers 348 degrees on students who completed their work during the summer session.

U.S. Rep. John Fogarty of Rhode Island tells the Ohio Contractors Association meeting in Ashtabula that the Lake Erie-Ohio River interconnecting waterway is important to Ohio, Pennsylvania and the nation.

Signs directing motorists to Columbiana County’s six remaining covered bridges are being erected by the county Highway Department.

1939: Atty. David Fitch Anderson, 75, one of the best-loved and most bitterly hated lawyers to have practiced in Youngstown over the last half century, dies at his home at Broadway and Fifth Avenue. He was a staunch advocate of law business solicitation, or ambulance chasing, as it is derisively known.

The Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority recommends to the U.S. Housing Authority that a contract of $38,000 be awarded to Emanual Katzman of Youngstown for construction of a community building at the Westlake housing project.
