New vans for dog warden

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners bought two 2014 cargo vans for the dog warden’s office from Sweeney Chevrolet in Boardman for $43,550. The purchase was made from the county’s dog and kennel fund, which is derived from fees for dog licenses and fines for dog-law violations.

They also approved a $35,311 agreement with Boak & Sons Inc. of Austintown to replace the administration building roof at the Campbell Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Rabies-vaccine baiting

WARREN

Cortland, Hubbard, Newton Falls, Niles, Warren and Girard are the areas targeted for this year’s Trumbull County oral rabies vaccination baiting Wednesday through Sept. 12.

Ohio Division of Wildlife baiting from an airplane will take place Wednesday through Aug. 23. Helicopter baiting will occur between Aug. 25 and Aug. 29.

Oral rabies vaccination baits vaccinate raccoons against rabies and won’t injure more than 60 species of animals, such as cats and dogs, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Residents who find a bait are asked to leave it alone unless it is on the lawn or driveway — or some other place that a raccoon is unlikely to travel. In that case, move the bait with a glove, plastic bag, paper towel or other covering to an area that might attract a raccoon.
