Poland motorcyclist dies in collision with SUV in Boardman

BOARDMAN

The Canfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol says Anthony J. Scarnecchia, 59, of Poland, was killed when his motorcycle collided with an SUV about 9:20 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. Route 224 and Hitchcock Road.

A news release from the patrol says Scarnecchia was traveling east on Route 224 in the right lane approaching Hitchcock Road. The SUV, a Jeep Wrangler, was westbound on 224 in the left lane and was trying to turn south on Hitchcock Road when the motorcycle collided with the Jeep as it was turning.

The driver of the Jeep was a 16-year-old female from Youngstown. The patrol would not release her name because she is a juvenile. The passenger also was 16 and was taken by her parents to be treated for injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Scarnecchia died at St. Elizabeth Health Center at 10:11 p.m. Wednesday, the release states.

At a Mahoning County commissioner’s meeting Thursday, Commissioner David Ditzler said he knew Scarnecchia and asked that motorists “please watch out for motorcycles.”

He continued, “He’s someone that comes to a lot of political functions. He’s a good person that unfortunately was in the wrong place at the wrong time [Wednesday]. It’s sad.”

The accident is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
