First Presbyterian Church plans a summer health and safety day this weekend as an alternative to a weeklong vacation Bible school.

Pastor Jamie Milton said the Christian education committee suggested a one-day event instead of the usual VBS.

The activity is planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church parking lot, 3654 Main St.

“The committee thought it would try a one-day drop-in event instead of the VBS that requires a commitment,” Pastor Milton said.

The health and safety day is geared to children in sixth grade and younger, though parents are encouraged to attend as well.

“We’re focusing on healthy lifestyles,” Pastor Milton said.

He said there will be various stations set up.

“We have several nurses in the congregation who are helping out,” he said.

Blood-pressure screening will be offered. Information will be provided on poison control, bee stings, sun exposure, hand washing, healthful foods, dental hygiene and exercise.

“We’ll be giving out some freebies such as drawstring backpacks, toothbrushes and band aids,” Pastor Milton said.

Printed information also will be available. The backpacks were donated by Northside Medical Center, ValleyCare Health System of Ohio.

Additionally, the church has invited emergency personnel with their vehicles to attend.

Young teens from the congregation will assist with Bible stories and crafts.

“The stories will center around Jesus’ healing people,” the pastor said.

The activity also will include food.

In keeping with the theme, that will be fruit and yogurt.

There also will be fun activities such as games and a petting zoo.

“We’re always looking at ways to open our doors to the community,” Pastor Milton said.
