Former union treasurer indicted for theft

YOUNGSTOWN — The former treasurer of the Youngstown Firefighters Professional Association was indicted on a theft charge Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury.

Destry Rush, 45, of Naydne Drive, will be arraigned before Common Pleas Court Judge John Durkin later this month on the charge.

The indictment says that Rush took between $7,500 and $150,000 between Jan. 1, 2008 and April 14 of this year, the day he resigned as a captain from the department.

Rush had worked as a firefighter since November of 1993 and was promoted to captain in July of 2011.

Police began an investigation in April after several irregularities in records brought the matter to the attention of union officials.
